At today's briefing, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird opened with comments about the recent protests following the tragic killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. Our community is having the difficult and necessary conversations that lead to healing and equity. She thanked last night's protesters for their peaceful and powerful demonstration. She recognized local law enforcement agencies - the Lincoln Police Department, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, and the Nebraska State Patrol - for their efforts to create a more positive and peaceful environment for both protesters and law enforcement.

Mayor Leirion announced that the current number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Lancaster County stands at 1,245, up 17 from yesterday and including 70 positive cases identified over the weekend. While briefings are held twice a week, the numbers are updated daily at covid19.lincoln.ne.gov. Recoveries are at 195, up from 163 on Friday. That number is expected to increase as more people get past the 28-day, symptom-free marker required for recovery.

The COVID Risk Dial remains in the orange category signifying that the risk of infection in Lincoln is high. Guidance on steps you can take to keep yourself and others healthy is available at the link under the dial. Continue to stay home as much as possible, limit your interactions with people outside your household, wash your hands frequently, and wear a cloth face covering.

You are at risk anytime you are with other people. If you choose to attend a rally, wear a face covering and maintain as much distance from others as possible.

Testing is available in Lincoln at Bryan LifePointe through Bryan Health and at Lincoln North Star High School through CHI Health St. Elizabeth. Test Nebraska will be back at the Lancaster Event Center this Thursday, June 4. Testing at these sites is by appointment only. You are encouraged to get tested if you are concerned about exposure or have symptoms. Call your doctor or go to bryanhealth.com, chihealth.com, or testnebraska.com to begin the process. If you need help, contact the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) at 402-441-8006. Nearly 12,000 people were tested in May, and 935 positive tests, 77% of the total number of confirmed cases, were identified.

The overall positivity rate is 7.5%, down slightly from 7.6% on Friday. The state rate is down from 13.9% on Friday to 13.5% today, and the national rate is down from 14.3% to 13.1%.

Today, 34 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized locally, the same number as on Friday. The number of people on ventilators is down from 12 on Friday to 8 today.

Contact tracers continue to work to identify small clusters of 2 or more cases connected to a particular location. Today, 67% of the cluster cases in Lancaster County are connected to food or meat processing facilities. The number of cases related to the Smithfield Crete plant has increased from 319 on Friday to 328 today. The number of cases related to Smithfield Lincoln increased from 27 to 28 as did the number of cases related to the SmartChicken plant in Waverly. The number of cases related to Universal Cold Storage increased from 31 to 33.

A new tool is available to help local event planners. Any indoor or outdoor venue that holds more than 500 people must submit a reopening plan to LLCHD. An event plan application is now available at covid19.lincoln.ne.gov under the Business Resources tab.

At today's briefing, Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird reported two new cases of COVID-19 in Lincoln bringing the total to 59, 41 of which are community-spread. According to Pat Lopez, Interim Director of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, Lincoln's positivity rate (the number of positive cases compared to the number of tests completed) is 3.2%, well below state and national rates.

Lincoln's testing capacity continues to expand and, including drive-through testing sites at Northstar High School and Bryan LifePointe, can handle about 150 tests daily with a turnaround of about 48 hours for test results. You must have a doctor's order or a referral from CHI Health St. Elizabeth, Bryan Health or the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department in order to be tested at a drive-through site.

Mayor Leirion and City Councilman Roy Christensen provided information about how to safely visit medical providers during this time. Please contact your provider and make the decision about the need to visit in person together with them. Options like telehealth and telephone consultation should be explored.

Mayor Leirion invited everyone to be part of the Mayor's Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 this Friday morning, April 17. Hosted by the Faith Coalition of Lancaster County, the online event will be carried live on LNKTV City and will feature Nipun Mehta, founder of ServiceSpace speaking on Building a Compassionate Community.

Boxing works by moving your body in all planes of motion while continuously changing the routine as you progress through the workout.
