🤍Today I had the honor of doing my grandmother’s hair for the last time. I feel lost with a lot of mixed emotions and if I’m being honest, grief after dementia is complicated.

Dementia is cruel. It changes someone, it exhausts them, and it exhausts the people who love them too. Toward the end she was so tired, and while my heart hurts that she’s gone, there is also relief knowing she doesn’t have to fight that battle anymore.

My grandmother was a fiery redhead with a strong will and the need to direct traffic. She could be very difficult at times -dementia took hold and ripped the good parts of her away- loving someone through that is not always easy to talk about. She was also incredibly funny, full of personality, and she loved her family!

This week before she became unresponsive, I got to see a piece of her again. The sweet, funny version of her that dementia tried to take. In that moment she reminded me how funny she was and how much she loved me, that is something I will hold onto forever. That was a gift I didn’t know I needed.

If you’ve loved someone with dementia, you know the grief starts long before they pass. You mourn them in pieces. And when the end comes, there is sadness… but also peace.

I will miss her. I will miss who she was before this disease. I choose to remember the strong, funny, complicated, loving woman she was — not just the illness she fought.

I loved that woman, she was more than my granny she was the mom I needed ❤️
