Christine McLean is a prominent figure in the hair braiding community in Arkansas, having emigrated from the Ivory Coast in 1998 where she learned traditional hair braiding. She has been a professional hair braider for 16 years, working in Florida and Missouri before opening her shop, Labelle Professional African Hair Braiding, in Little Rock. Despite her extensive experience and the safe, chemical-free nature of hair braiding, Christine faced legal challenges due to Arkansas' stringent cosmetology licensing requirements, which demanded 1,600 hours of training not relevant to hair braiding.

Christine, along with another braider, Nivea Earl, filed a lawsuit against the state, arguing that these requirements were excessive and hindered their right to earn a living. The case highlighted the disparity between the skills needed for hair braiding and the content of traditional cosmetology courses, which do not cover braiding techniques.

In response to this lawsuit and ongoing advocacy, Arkansas passed a law in 2015 that exempted natural hair braiders from needing a cosmetology license, allowing them to practice their craft without the burden of irrelevant training. This change was a significant victory for McLean and other hair braiders in the state, providing them with the freedom to continue their work without fear of legal repercussions.
