🦷I absolutely loved dentals during my years in veterinary medicine.

🩻That said, I strongly believe nothing replaces a professional anesthetic dental cleaning performed by your veterinarian. Dental X-rays allow them to evaluate what’s happening below the gumline(where many painful problems hide) and those are things an awake cleaning simply cannot assess.

🩷This sweet girl, 💋Cocoa, is one of our regular Elite guests. At 13 years old, her family is understandably nervous about anesthesia. Like many small-breed dogs (we’ve had four ourselves!), she gets significant tartar buildup.

🥰Using Fear Free techniques and moving entirely at 💋Cocoa’s pace, we started by gently scaling and polishing the outside surfaces of her front teeth. No drugs, no sedation, no anesthesia. Although, another advantage your veterinarian has during an anesthetic dental is being able to thoroughly clean every surface of every tooth, including the inner sides of the teeth and below the gumline, safely.

🏡Because 💋Cocoa is boarding with us for a few days, we’ll continue working with her a little at a time if she’s comfortable. We want every experience to stay positive and stress-free so she doesn’t learn to fear having her mouth handled.

⚕️Our goal isn’t to replace veterinary dentistry. It’s to help maintain oral health for dogs who tolerate it well, while recognizing that if 💋Cocoa ever needs extractions, dental X-rays, treatment below the gumline, or anything more advanced, she’ll need to see her veterinarian.

🪥Daily brushing with a VOHC-approved toothpaste can make an incredible difference in your dog’s oral health and may help slow the buildup of plaque and tartar between professional dental procedures.

✨We know polishing is a very important step after scaling! It smooths the tooth surface, helping reduce how quickly plaque sticks again. 💋Cocoa was such a superstar for both her scaling and polishing today. Good girl, 💋Cocoa!

Poor 🧀Gouda came to us with severe matting, a thin body condition, dehydration, and his coat heavily saturated with urine. When mats become this severe and urine is trapped against the skin, it creates the perfect environment for painful irritation, skin infections, bruising, and even accidental injury during removal.

✂️It also appears that someone had recently attempted a catheter placement and shaving, but unfortunately it was not successful, leaving him needing some extra TLC.

❤️‍🩹We carefully removed his painful coat and used specialized products to gently cleanse his skin, remove the urine buildup, and soothe his irritated body. This is the first time his skin has been able to feel fresh air in a long time!

🧀Gouda is already feeling so much better without that heavy, painful “cast” of mats weighing him down. He has been sent to his foster home with medicated shampoo and instructions to continue helping his skin heal.

🏡Now this sweet boy is ready for the next chapter. Finding a forever home where he can be loved, spoiled, and finally just be a dog.
