The Hidden Art of Lockport
Published by Mitzi Klopfstein Blanchard ·
The City of Lockport’s Summer Art Series is partnering with the Lockport branch of the White Oak Library to present “The Hidden Art of Lockport: Mini-Canvas Hunt”! Miniature works of art will be hidden in various places in the city throughout the summer for you to find and take home.
During the months of June, July and August, there will be a Drop Day announcement on the first Saturday of the month. Artists and non-artists alike (ages 12 and up) are invited to pick up a mini-canvas kit from the library’s front desk and create a masterpiece. Each canvas comes with a mini easel to display it, and a plastic bag to protect it from the elements. Once you have completed your painting, take a picture of it. Between the hours of 7PM on Friday and 9 AM on Saturday (Drop Day), hide it someplace that will be fairly easy to find (be sure to hide it in public areas only). Find the GPS coordinate for your location (see instructions below on how to do that). Then post your photo on the Hidden Art of Lockport page and on your own page, using the hashtag . Include the GPS location and clues to help people find your artwork.
There will be several pieces hidden throughout the summer by professional artists, some of whom you may recognize. These artists will be publicized on the Hidden Art page each month. You’ll also find a special prize in each professional art piece, so be sure to check the Hidden Art of Lockport page for clues and coordinates!
The canvases are free, but you can only get one per person. This is a family friendly event, so please keep your artwork appropriate for all ages 😊
In conjunction with the event, the library will host TWO art painting classes, taught by professional artists.
The first class will be taught by artist Vicky Hallberg on Saturday, May 14 at 10:30 AM. She will be teaching how to create animal portraits in miniature.
The second will be taught by artist Maggie Capettini on Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 AM. She will be teaching how to create an abstract mini-masterpiece using paint and a palette knife.
Please contact the Lockport branch of the White Oak Library for details and to register for these classes. You must be pre-registered to attend.
Are you ready to get your art on??
HOW TO FIND YOUR GPS COORDINATES: Go to your location. Make sure your location indicator on your phone is turned ON. Open Google Maps. When it opens, you will see a map with a big blue dot – you are the dot. Press and hold the dot for a few seconds. The GPS coordinates for your location will appear in the Search bar. That’s all there is to it!
