Yes, protective styles like sew ins help because the sebum naturally moisturizes the hair shaft, and keeping the hair so close to the scalp in braids helps that happen.

Yes, by manipulating it less you’re decreasing your chances of breaking the hair off due to styling or snagging.

But if you don’t keep up your maintenance by getting your routine trims, cleanses, and ensuring that you’re removing the styles at the right time you can be causing more damage to your hair. Split ends can and will still travel up the shaft. Shed hair will still mat up, and you’ll be upset when you lose clumps of hair at the end of the style.

When we first met , her hair was suffering 🫩

Had to break the news to this client that it’s time for a short break from constant sew ins.

We installed her first round back in November of 2025, and as a Crown & Root Society Member she’s been back in our chair every. Month. Since.

After 4 weeks we’d cleanse her scalp and restyle, then after another 4 we’d remove the entire install before re-installing again. Why? We’ve been working on her hair growth journey since November 2023 after she lost four plus inches of length from damage and breakage. She committed to her maintenance and took our advice (and her growth shows it), but now it’s time for a small break before round 2.

So yes, she’s being dramatic…but we love her for it and we’re so proud of how far she’s come.
