There are so many incredible performances to choose from, but these three have always stood out to me.

Malcolm X is one of the greatest biographical performances I’ve ever seen. Denzel completely disappears into the role and captures every stage of Malcolm’s life so brilliantly that you forget you’re watching an actor.

Alonzo Harris in Training Day is just iconic. Every scene he’s in, he completely owns the screen. He’s charismatic, intimidating and completely unpredictable. It’s one of those performances you never forget, and it’s no surprise it earned Denzel the Academy Award for Best Actor.

Then there’s Troy Maxson in Fences. It’s a quieter performance, but just as powerful. Troy is such a complicated character, and Denzel makes you understand him even when you don’t agree with him. Some of the conversations in that film still stick with me.

These three roles remind me why Denzel is one of the greatest actors to ever do it. The range he has is unreal.

In November 2021, archaeologists announced the discovery of a relatively well-preserved mummy in an underground tomb at the Cajamarquilla archaeological site, located approximately 25 kilometers east of Lima, Peru’s capital.

The excavation was led by a team from the National University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos). The mummy was found in an oval-shaped chamber situated directly beneath the site’s former town square.

It had been tightly bound with strong ropes, placed in a fetal position with its hands covering its face, and wrapped in textile fragments.

Researchers estimate the mummy to be between 800 and 1,200 years old, dating to the pre-Inca period (roughly the 8th to 13th centuries CE). Preliminary analysis indicates it belonged to a young man, approximately 18 to 30 years of age, who may have been a trader or an individual of elevated social status who had migrated from the Andean highlands to this important commercial center.

Although the posture may appear unusual or even unsettling to modern observers, specialists emphasize that it was a standard funerary practice in the ancient cultures of southern and central Peru. Binding the body with ropes and positioning the hands over the face formed part of common burial rituals in highland regions, symbolizing the cycle of life and death or a state of “sleep” in preparation for the afterlife.
A range of offerings and everyday objects accompanied the burial, including:

• the remains of an Andean guinea pig and a dog,
• corn kernels and other botanical remains,
• pottery fragments, and
• stone tools.

In antiquity, Cajamarquilla served as a major trading hub linking the Pacific coast with the Andean highlands. It ranked among the largest pre-Columbian settlements in the region and may have supported a population exceeding 10,000 inhabitants at its height.
This discovery provides valuable new evidence concerning burial customs and social organization in pre-Inca societies, particularly those associated with the Chaclla culture and related groups.
