Most gift days belong to one person. Japan has one that belongs to everyone older than you, on the same day, nationwide.

We looked into Keiro no Hi (September 21) and the real story behind it: a village in Okinawa with the highest concentration of elderly residents in Japan, and a study that followed 600+ centenarians to find out why they live so long. Spoiler: it's not a secret ingredient, it's small habits kept up for decades.

Both countries set aside time to tend the graves of the people who came before. The US does it once a year, on Memorial Day. Japan does it twice, in a seven-day week centered on each equinox.

At Sh*tenno-ji in Osaka, there's a ritual for it: every equinox at 5:20pm, people gather to watch the sun set exactly through the temple's west gate.

This year's autumn equinox was September 23.

Look up tonight and you'll see the same moon everywhere on Earth. What you see in it depends on where you're standing.

In Japan, a full moon means a rabbit pounding mochi. In the US, it's a face. Same shadows, same distance, completely different figures.

Tsukimi, Japan's harvest-moon viewing ritual, turns that difference into an actual excuse to go outside. This year: September 25.

Japan doesn't measure time in four seasons. It measures it in seventy-two.

The classical Japanese calendar splits the year into micro-seasons of about five days each, and each one is named for something small and specific happening in nature right then, not "autumn," but "the thunder stops."

We wrote about what that kind of attention can teach us. Comment SEASONS and we'll send you the link to the full article.
