I used to think not fitting in meant there was something wrong with me.
We’ve learned that belonging comes with conditions – that we need to be more palatable, more “normal,” more like everyone else to be worthy of connection.
For late-identified autistic and AuDHD adults, this hits differently. You’ve likely spent decades trying to decode the unwritten rules, “fixing” yourself to squeeze into spaces that were never designed for you, all while carrying this belief that if people knew the real you, they’d pull away.
But you don’t need to earn love by performing a more acceptable version of yourself. You deserve acceptance exactly as you are – stimming, special interests, sensory needs, communication style, and all.
It was never about you needing to change to fit in - it was about finding the people you fit with without needing to change who you are.
If you’re on a journey of unmasking, self-discovery, or simply learning to accept your neurodivergent self after years of trying to fit in – you’re in the right place. I share insights, validation, and support for late-discovered autistic and AuDHD adults navigating this path.
Hit follow if this resonates. Let’s build a community where you can finally belong without shrinking yourself ❤️ Tyana Tavakol (she/her) | Anxiety & Autism Therapist

It starts early 💕
While not everyone who is autistic will relate to this, it’s a dynamic I’ve seen time and again. And, makes total sense given the amount of “fixing” someone may have been told their whole lives they need before being “good enough”.
The first step to break these cycles is awareness. Starting to reflect on the relationships in your life, noticing where you have to change who you are to feel accepted. You’ve always deserved to be fully embraced, not tolerated.
If this is or has been you, just know you’re not alone ❤️ Follow Tyana Tavakol (she/her) | Anxiety & Autism Therapist for more neurodiversity affirming therapy content.

1. I only see clients 3 days a week. Monday through Wednesday, 6 clients a day. I’ve learned this is the schedule that lets me show up as the best therapist I can be. It gives me enough time to recharge, so when I’m with clients, I’m fully present.
2. I sync my energy expenditure with the natural ebb and flow of my hormones. Socializing and higher-energy activities? Follicular and ovulation phase. More alone time and lower-demand days? Luteal phase. I stopped expecting myself to have the same energy every week because I truly don’t.
3. I only do 2 social hangouts a week. Maximum. When I first started my practice, I paid attention to how many social plans I could enjoy before they started feeling like another obligation. For me, that number is two.
4. I keep sensory and grounding tools within reach during sessions. A candle, lip balm, essential oils, a soft blanket, a fidget ring…if I notice my focus slipping, having something sensory nearby helps me stay regulated and present.
5. If I start hyperfixating on my comfort food, I just get it. (Goodles I love you. 😂) Instead of using all my mental energy trying not to think about it, I just get it and enjoy it. Way less exhausting and much more delicious.
6. I go outside every single day. Even on harder days. Sometimes it’s a walk, sometimes it’s just 10 minutes of fresh air. It helps my mood, my sleep, and my energy levels to go and look outside and appreciate the cuteness of the squirrels right outside my front door.
I work with late diagnosed autistic adults in California & Florida to help them understand their own brains and sensory needs. Not following any one particular plan or suggestion, but what’s truly going to work for them. I currently have a few openings! If this is something you’d like to work on, reach out for a free consult using the link in my bio. Let’s figure this out together 🥰

The first time we meet, I can see the you that’s learned people can’t be trusted. ❤️
The apologizing for not saying things “right”. The smile plastered on as you share how hard it’s been. The scanning to see if I’m judging you. I don’t see any of that as overreactive, unnecessary, or too sensitive. I see it as someone who has had a lifetime of being misunderstood and judged for being too much for just being themselves.
But I also see the you before life taught you there’s something wrong with you. Before you started shrinking yourself. Before you learned to chameleon to fit what people want from you. That quirky, amazing, unique human being that’s been too scary to show othersz
That version of you is there. And together we’ll help them come out, and learn that taking off the mask will lead to more connection and acceptance than you could even imagine ❤️
DM me READY when you’re ready to learn who you are under the mask for those in CA & FL. Your consult call is free ❤️
