🥳EXCITING NEWS FOR WOMEN🥳
PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is now known as PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome)!!
Why is this important???🤔
The prior name, PCOS, by name implies that the syndrome is all about the ovaries being "polycystic". In fact, many women with PCOS, do not even have true ovarian cysts. The follicular cysts sometimes noted on ultrasound are really just tiny little follicles.
By renaming this syndrome PMOS, we are finally recognizing that this is a full body, complex, inflammatory, metabolic condition that involves many hormones throughout the body and brain.
There is a strong association with insulin resistance. It has been quoted that 75% up to 85% of women with PMOS have either insulin resistance or Type 2 diabetes.
Women with PMOS, often face difficulty losing weight, irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and are at increased risk for diabetes, hypertension, heart, disease, and even uterine cancer!
Hopefully, more research will now go into the appropriate early diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome!
