Even the king of the jungle isn't safe from a bad haircut.

A visitor to Guangzhou Zoo snapped photos of a resident lion sporting bangs and posted them online. The photographs went viral as people speculated about the unusual hairstyle.

Many social media users believed the zookeepers were responsible for cutting the hairstyle. The blunt, precise bangs looked too perfect to be natural.

However, the zoo denied this in a statement. They said the hairstyle was "taken care of" by the lion itself and that they wouldn't "dare" cut the mane.

A zoo employee said: "There is no hairdressing programme at the zoo, and we dare not cut a lion's hair. You can say that he has 'designed' the hairstyle himself".

The zoo explained that the hairstyle was caused by humidity in the area. Lions groom themselves by licking their fur, which can cause changes to how their mane looks from time to time.

One visitor who claimed to have seen the lion less than a week earlier said it didn't have a fringe then, which made people even more suspicious.

Whether it was humidity or a bad grooming decision, this lion gave everyone a good laugh. Even kings have bad hair days. 🦁
