Scientists just discovered that peptides in axolotl mucus kills breast cancer cells naturally, without harming healthy tissue.

And it also destroys drug-resistant MRSA bacteria

Published in the journal PLOS ONE, the study reveals that specific antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) extracted from the axolotl's protective slime successfully destroyed methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Even more remarkably, three of these peptides selectively triggered programmed cell death in breast cancer cells while completely sparing healthy breast tissue, offering an incredibly precise new pathway for targeted therapies.

By gently massaging captive-bred axolotls to collect their mucus, scientists identified and synthesized 22 potential peptide candidates, finding that their unique chemical structures allow them to puncture bacterial cell walls and disrupt oncogenes in cancer cells. This natural defense mechanism is significantly harder for pathogens to develop resistance against compared to traditional, overused antibiotics. While further testing is required before these peptides can be transformed into clinical treatments, the findings highlight the critical importance of conserving endangered species like the axolotl, whose unique biology could hold the key to solving some of humanity's most pressing medical crises.

Food is medicine. 🌿🤍

Not because one meal can cure disease, but because what we give our bodies matters - especially when they’re working hard to heal.

This weekend has been about nourishing my heart-mom from the inside out after breast cancer surgery. Homemade bone broth, real ingredients, healing herbs and teas, minerals, protein, warmth, rest, and a whole lot of love poured into every bowl. 🍲

There is something so powerful about returning to the basics: whole foods, plants, nourishment, and giving the body what it needs to rebuild.

That’s also why I’m excited to launch a video series called “Back to Basics,” where I’ll be sharing healthy recipes and simple ways to nourish the body. So many people have encouraged me to do this for years, but I’m finally feeling confident enough to share what I’ve learned and what I love creating in the kitchen.

Medicine has its place. So does nutrition. So does rest. So does love.

Healing is the whole picture. 🎀🌿

Packing my bag to go love on my stepmom after breast cancer surgery - except apparently my version of “packing” means bringing half the apothecary. 😂🌿

Watch til the end for the surprise.

Teas for comfort, herbs for gentle nourishment, homemade food, bone broth, and anything else I can think of to make these next few days a little easier. 🤍 There’s something really special about being able to use what I’ve learned and what I’ve grown to care for someone I love.

Healing isn’t always glamorous. Sometimes it looks like rest, tears, warm tea, good food, and having someone there to say, “I’ve got you.” 🌿✨

Woke up feeling like something was trying to creep in, so naturally I headed straight for the apothecary shelf. 🌿☕️ Elderberry, marshmallow root, echinacea + a few of my favorite little additions for a comforting morning cup.

This is one of my favorite parts of working with herbs: learning what my body is asking for and knowing what I have on hand to support it. 🤍 From soil to soul, always.

A little behind the scenes of packing up a Root to Bloom order 🌿🤎 I love getting to actually show you what’s inside these bottles and why I chose each herb.

She’s getting No. 02 Rooted Relief - formerly known as my Neuropathy Tincture, but I got so many reports of other great benefits as well I decided to rename it.

🌿 Rooted Relief: tulsi, St. John’s wort, turmeric, Siberian ginseng + ginger - a blend created to support healthy inflammation response, nervous-system comfort, relaxation and overall wellness.

Every bottle is blended, bottled, labeled and packaged by hand right here at Root to Bloom Apothecary. There’s something pretty special about watching a handful of herbs become something that gets to go home with someone. 🥹🌿

Mosquitoes treat me like an all you can eat buffet, and my skin takes it VERY personally. 🦟😂

I applied my Purple Dead Nettle Oil immediately after this bite (that’s how big it got in a matter of like a minute because I’m allergic ). This is the initial bump and how it looked about an hour later. I tend to have strong reactions to mosquito bites, so I wanted to share the magic! 🌿💜

Beyond this, purple dead nettle also contains plant compounds studied for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal AND antimicrobial properties, so it’s great for cuts, scrapes, bug bites, fungal infections, etc, eczema, psoriasis, etc.
