Hey Curl Friendz! This transformation has been a long time coming.

My client has been with me for a while. We started by growing her hair, then she decided she wanted to go shorter. Eventually, we started talking COLOR, but I wanted her hair to be in a healthier state before we took that step.

When it comes to color, I always allow my clients to bring inspiration. But when they don’t know exactly what they want? Baby, that’s where I LOVE to create. I customize the color based on their complexion, lifestyle, and what I feel is going to amplify their natural beauty.

My Curly Confidence class is about so much more than learning a cutting technique. It’s about building your confidence behind the chair when servicing clients with curly and textured hair.

Many stylists are afraid of textured hair because they don’t fully understand it and when you don’t understand something, it’s hard to feel confident doing it.

I truly love teaching textured and curly hair education. There’s something so special about helping stylists and students learn how to properly care for textured hair, understand cutting techniques, and build their product knowledge.

This is an area where many beauty schools have seriously lacked, so being able to help fill that gap through education is something that is very dear to my heart.

Try this for a smoother flat twist.

I’m using Matrix A Curl Can Dream after prepping the hair. I also use it as my styling product for her flat twists because she loves to unravel them and wear a twist-out without that crunchy or hard feeling.

It gives me a smooth, shiny, moisturized finish while keeping those parts nice and clean. We finished her look with a cute bun that’s comfortable enough for her to sleep in at night.

Flat twists are such a versatile protective style. Cute, comfortable, and easy to switch up.

Would you wear your flat twists as a protective style or unravel them for a twist-out?

Your hair can be growing and still look like it’s not retaining length.

Sometimes the issue is what’s happening at the ends. When textured hair is blown out, I’m able to really see what those ends are doing, where they’re thinning, splitting, becoming see-through, or no longer giving the hair a healthy shape.

And no, trimming your hair does not make it grow from the scalp. But removing compromised ends can help prevent splitting and breakage from traveling farther up the strand, which can help you retain the length you’re growing.

Curl Friendz, don’t be so afraid of losing length that you hold onto ends that aren’t serving the rest of your hair.

Hey Curl Friendz, PART TWO of “Her Curls Weren’t Curling” is UP.

My girl came in with curls that just weren’t giving anymore, especially around her crown. They were droopy, lacking definition, and she had quite a few stringy ends that needed to GO. She hadn’t had a cut in over a year, and because she’s active in sports, ponytails were her go-to.

This appointment was about more than styling. We talked about the importance of regular trims, shaping, treatments, and understanding what your curls actually need.

Before you touch the hair, you need to understand what you’re looking at.

In every Curly Confidence class, I teach my students to analyze the hair in its dry, natural state BEFORE heading to the shampoo bowl.

Why? Because once you wet the hair, you’ve altered what was originally in front of you.

Take the time to visually assess the curl patterns, shape, density, and how the hair naturally falls. That information matters before you start cutting, styling, or manipulating anything.

Great texture work starts with understanding the hair before trying to change it.
