In Japanese culture, ikigai is the idea of finding purpose and fulfillment in life. It lives somewhere between what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what can sustainably support your life.

For many of us in massage practice, ikigai is not simply about making a living. It is the quiet privilege of helping others heal, reconnect, breathe easier, and feel cared for through touch. It is continuing to learn, refine our craft, and show up with intention each day. Sometimes the work is exhausting, but somehow it still fills the spirit. That may be part of what ikigai feels like.

BAREFOOT BODYWORK ON THE INTERNATIONAL STAGE

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

It was another meaningful weekend for barefoot bodywork competitors at the 2026 European Massage Championship in Paris. While no medal was earned, barefoot bodywork gained something equally meaningful: visibility, representation, and a stronger place on the international stage.

This weekend, juries, therapists, and audiences witnessed different interpretations of barefoot bodywork sharing one stage. Different levels. Different approaches. Some blended traditional hands-on techniques with barefoot work, all connected by the same intention of using the feet as therapeutic tools with skill, creativity, purpose, and care.

Barefoot bodywork has existed for thousands of years, yet it still remains a minority in many professional massage spaces. Many still believe the feet cannot feel like the hands, but seasoned barefoot practitioners understand that sensitivity comes from training, awareness, listening, intention, and years of disciplined practice. Scientifically, the feet contain thousands of nerve endings and are capable of refined sensory perception. When properly trained, the feet can develop remarkable precision, adaptability, control, and therapeutic sensitivity.

Barefoot bodywork is not simply about deep pressure. It is about flow, balance, connection, sustainability, and learning how to work with gravity while preserving the therapist’s body for longevity in practice.

To some, barefoot bodywork may appear unusual, yet when experienced firsthand, many realize it is simply a different language of touch.

This past weekend, FIVE talented barefoot therapists stood proudly side by side on an international stage.

Recognition is not built from one performance, one class, or one championship alone. It comes from consistency, humility, courage, and continuing to show up with heart.
