"M's" Story ❤️

Today, a woman walked into Studio CARA and reminded me exactly why I do what I do.

She had booked a makeup lesson and, with a nervous smile, said, "Please be patient with me. I'm 56 years old, and I still don't know how to do my makeup."

She was petite, kind, and eager to learn.

As we worked together, step by step, I watched something beautiful happen. It wasn't just that she was learning where to place blush or how to blend her eyeshadow. I watched her confidence begin to return. Her face literally started to light up as she looked in the mirror.

I asked if her husband was going to take her out for dinner to show off her beautiful new look.

She quietly replied, "No... we don't have a good relationship."

Then she shared something that broke my heart.

She told me she had been married since she was 19 years old, and for years he had told her she was ugly... and stupid.

Then she looked at me and said, "I'm tired of crying. I don't want to cry anymore or feel sad. I've decided to love myself and ignore him. That's why I came here—to feel beautiful and learn how to love myself. I've lost 24 pounds, and I'm finally starting to feel pretty and strong."

I couldn't hold back my tears.

I hugged her and said, "Ugly doesn't live here."

I told her that anytime she wanted to come back, we would continue her transformation together, learning new looks and celebrating every step. It was my honor to be part of her journey.

She smiled and said, "I know God sent me here."

And in that moment, I believed He did.

I am a makeup artist but makeup is only the icing on the cake.

What I really hope to give women is permission to see the beauty that has always been there—to rediscover their confidence, their worth, and the woman they may have forgotten while taking care of everyone else.

No woman should ever be made to feel ugly.

And no woman should ever believe those words when someone else speaks them over her.

You are worthy.
You are beautiful.
You are enough.

Today, "M" reminded me that sometimes a makeup lesson becomes so much more than makeup.

My grandmother came to America from Nicaragua in the 1940s with her five children and an unshakable belief that tomorrow could be better than today. She left behind the only life she had ever known, carrying with her faith, courage, and a dream—not for herself alone, but for the generations she would never live to see.

She arrived in San Francisco believing that freedom, opportunity, and hard work could change the course of a family’s future.

She was right.

Today, three generations later, we are proud American citizens who still carry her legacy. We honor our Latino roots, our family traditions, our culture, and the values she passed down: resilience, gratitude, compassion, and the courage to keep moving forward.

When I look across this country, I don’t just see breathtaking landscapes. I see something even more beautiful—a kaleidoscope of faces, cultures, languages, hearts, and souls. Every family has a story. Some arrived centuries ago. Others came more recently. But so many share the same hope: to build a life filled with possibility and to leave a brighter future for those who come after them.

That is the enduring beauty of America.

Our strength has never come from all being the same. It comes from the countless stories, traditions, and dreams that have come together to create something greater than any one of us could build alone.

Today, I celebrate my grandmother’s extraordinary courage. I celebrate my Latino heritage with pride. I celebrate every generation that sacrificed so their children and grandchildren could dream a little bigger, reach a little higher, and live a little freer.

May we always remember that the American dream is not simply inherited—it is renewed by every generation willing to work hard, lift others up, and believe in a better tomorrow.

May we honor those who came before us by building bridges instead of walls, choosing kindness over division, and recognizing the humanity we all share.

Here’s to the dreamers. Here’s to the builders. Here’s to the families whose stories make this nation richer, stronger, and more beautiful.

There are friends that come into your life for a season… and then there are the ones that become family. My beautiful friend Shana is one of those people.

We met years ago on a movie set when she was in her early 20’s and I was the makeup artist. From the very beginning, we instantly connected. Shana has always had this wild, joyful spirit that lights up every room she walks into. She is the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back and love you completely and unconditionally.

I remember she always had a mole on her chest. Years later, she shared with me that it was melanoma. That mole was cancerous.

Right before her wedding, her life changed forever. She underwent surgeries, a double mastectomy, reconstruction, and the emotional journey of rebuilding herself from the inside out. Watching someone you love go through something so life-changing is heartbreaking, but watching them rise through it with strength, grace, humor, and courage is truly inspiring.

Shana is one of the strongest women I know. She faced fear head on and never stopped loving, laughing, and living fully. Her story is also such an important reminder to all of us to pay attention to our bodies, get checked, and never ignore changes in our skin. Early detection matters.

Today, I celebrate her beauty, her resilience, and her incredible heart. Cancer may have changed part of her story, but it never took away who she is — vibrant, beautiful, loving, and absolutely unforgettable.

Twenty years ago, Kim walked into my life after reading an article about Studio CARA. What began as a client relationship quickly became a friendship rooted in honesty, strength, humor, and heart. Today, I want to honor her story.

Breast cancer. The club no woman wants to join.
A sisterhood formed through words and experiences you never imagined you would speak out loud — drains, wigs, premature menopause, reconstruction, implant recalls, estrogen blockers, mood swings, scars, and survival.

Kim shared something so raw and true: the hardest part is not always the surgeries or treatments. Sometimes it’s having to sit in front of the people you love most — especially your children — and tell them your world has changed forever.

Cancer strips away modesty and replaces it with vulnerability, courage, and resilience. You become accustomed to scans, tests, poking, prodding, and living with the reality that even after survival, the journey never fully leaves you. Every new diagnosis you hear about brings you right back to that moment. And with survival often comes guilt — wondering why you made it when others did not.

But in the middle of all of that pain, something beautiful happens too.
People show up.
Friends become family. Communities rally around you. Meals appear at your door. Someone walks your dog. Someone cleans your house. Someone holds your hand. Someone makes you laugh when you thought you forgot how.

Kim reminded me that even in the darkest moments, humanity shines brightest. And perhaps one of the greatest gifts survivors discover is realizing just how incredibly strong they truly are.

To every woman fighting, surviving, healing, or remembering — you are seen, you are beautiful, and you are never alone. 🤍
