I always get asked what can I do for shedding and thinning hair . There are numerous reasons why this happens . First and foremost is to have a checkup with your doctor to make sure it’s not related to a medical condition.
What supplements can I use :
Vitamins that can support hair health include biotin, vitamins A, C, D, and E, and various B-complex vitamins, along with minerals like iron and zinc. A balanced diet is the best way to get these nutrients, but supplements may be helpful for those with deficiencies. Biotin (B7) is often highlighted for its role in hair structure, while vitamin D aids in the hair growth cycle, and iron helps carry oxygen to hair follicles.
Vitamins and minerals for hair health
Biotin (Vitamin B7): Essential for healthy hair, though deficiency is rare in healthy individuals.
Vitamin A: Helps cells grow, including hair, and helps skin glands produce sebum, which moisturizes the scalp.
Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress and is necessary for producing collagen and absorbing iron.
Vitamin D: Helps create new hair follicles and is essential for the hair growth cycle.
Vitamin E: Another antioxidant that can protect against oxidative stress.
B-Complex Vitamins (e.g., B12, folate): Help with vital functions including energy metabolism, and B12 helps deliver oxygen to hair roots.
Iron: Crucial for carrying oxygen to hair follicles. Iron deficiency is a common cause of hair loss.
Zinc: Supports healthy hair growth and scalp health.
Important considerations
Deficiency vs. supplementation: Supplements are most effective when there is a diagnosed deficiency. Extra supplements won't make hair grow faster if your nutrient levels are already sufficient.
Risk of high doses: Taking too much of certain vitamins, like vitamin A, can actually trigger hair loss. Excessive iron can also be harmful.
Consult a doctor: It is always best to speak with a healthcare provider before starting new supplements, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications. They can check for deficiencies and recommend a safe dosage.
