International Day for People of African Descent

Today, we celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures, and enduring contributions of people of African descent across the globe.

Observed each year on August 31, this United Nations observance was established in 2020 to recognize the achievements of the African diaspora while advancing the goals of recognition, justice, and development. It also commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Declaration of the Rights of the Negro Peoples of the World and serves as a reminder of the ongoing work to build a more just and equitable future.

Dr. Maya Angelou's life reflected the power and interconnectedness of the global African diaspora. Whether living and working in Ghana, traveling throughout Africa and Europe with Porgy and Bess, collaborating with civil rights leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, or using her poetry to uplift the human spirit, she celebrated the richness of Black identity while reminding us of our shared humanity.

Her work encouraged us to honor our history, embrace our cultures, and recognize the power of our stories.

As she so beautifully wrote: "We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike."

Today, we celebrate the resilience, creativity, brilliance, and lasting contributions of people of African descent around the world, as well as the generations who continue to shape history.
