Botulinum toxin, aka “botox”, is one of the top five non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the United States. Botox’s benefits for anti-aging have been well-documented including the glabellar lines (the “elevens” or in between the eyebrows), the peri-orbital lines (crow’s feet), and the forehead wrinkles. Botulinum toxin blocks the release of a chemical called acetylcholine which triggers the muscle contraction causing the wrinkles. You will likely see results 7-10 days and on average last about 3 months. It is not approved for pregnant or nursing women, or those with certain neuromuscular disorders such as Myasthenia Gravis, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or Eaton Lambert Syndrome. The procedure takes about 10-15 minutes and requires no numbing agent. You will need to remain upright and avoid exercise, bending over, lying flat or rubbing the injected area for about 4 hours post procedure. There are potential side effects, but no life threating complications have been reported in people who have used botulinum toxin for cosmetic reasons. The FDA states that cosmetic use appears to be safe. Minimal side effects will be included on your consent form to review prior to your injections.
