What do you think when you hear haircolor is "ammonia-free"?

Would you think that color is more health-conscious?

Well, it's actually a 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 sales pitch. But why? 🤔

There are many misconceptions about ammonia. Yes, ammonia has a noticeable odor (which could be why there is an assumption that it's not clean). But guess what? Ammonia is the gentlest and most naturally-sourced catalyst used in a permanent haircolor system.

All haircolor needs a driver (to lighten, pe*****te and oxidize the hair). If not ammonia, the most common substitute is a synthetic chemical made of alcohol and amine, like EA or MEA.

These synthetic alternatives have scents that are easy to mask and require copious amounts to make a coloring system work. Because of this, it is more common for clients to react with sensitivities, not to mention not having the same amount of coverage as ammonia!

Ammonia requires very little potency (provided the pigment system is high-end 😉) and immediately converts to a gas - quickly dissipating with nothing left behind.

Synthetic alternatives, however, can leave behind residual chemicals that stay in the hair. But you would never know because the scent is masked. 😬
