Is your hairbrush looking a little spooky? 👻 Your fall hair reset

Hello!

October is here, and I want to talk about something that’s been coming up in my chair: “Jenny, why am I seeing so much hair in my brush?”
It can be unsettling to see extra strands in the shower or on your clothes.
Before you buy a shelf full of products, let’s get to the root of what you’re noticing.
Shedding, breakage, and thinning aren’t quite the same thing.
Shedding is when a full strand comes out from the root. Breakage is when the strand snaps somewhere along its length, leaving shorter pieces and often making the ends look thinner or frizzier.
Sometimes both are happening at once.
Some shedding is part of a normal hair cycle.
A noticeable increase can also show up months after a stressful event, illness, major weight change, or other change in your body.
That delay can make it hard to connect the dots.
And while a new shampoo or treatment might make your hair feel better, it can’t tell us why hair is shedding from the root.

Here’s your at-home fall hair reset:

🍂 Notice the pattern. Is this a sudden increase or something that has been gradually changing? Are you seeing full-length hairs, short broken pieces, or a widening part? You don’t need to count every strand—just pay attention to what’s different for you.

🍂 Handle fragile hair gently. Shampoo your scalp without scrubbing the lengths, condition after washing, and work through tangles carefully. A leave-in conditioner or detangler can help reduce the pulling that leads to breakage.

🍂 Give your hair a break from extra tension and heat. Loosen up tight ponytails or buns, turn down the heat on styling tools, and avoid tugging at knots. Little habits between salon visits can make a real difference to the condition of your strands.

🍂 Support your hair with regular meals. Getting enough food and protein matters. If you suspect a nutrient issue, it’s better to talk with your healthcare professional than guess your way through hair-growth supplements.

October product spotlight: protection for more than hot-tool days ☀️
My pick this month is Bumble and bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Heat/UV Protective Primer. Yes, it’s useful before a blow-dry or hot tools—but you can enjoy its conditioning and UV-protection benefits even if you air-dry. Its UV filters help protect hair from the drying effects of the sun, making it a useful step if you spend time outdoors. It also helps detangle, which is especially welcome when you’re trying to be gentler with fragile strands.
Spray it through the mid-lengths and ends of damp hair, then style or air-dry as usual. You can also use it on dry hair to refresh between washes. Think of it as a sun-conscious step for your hair strands, not sunscreen for your scalp—and not a treatment for shedding from the root.

You don't need to attack your hair with every clarifying shampoo, protein treatment, oil, mask, or DIY remedy you can find on TikTok.
