Born in 1908, Oseola McCarty lived a life defined by hard work and simplicity in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

She left school in the sixth grade to care for her sick aunt and never returned to formal education.

Instead, she took up the family trade of doing laundry. For more than 75 years, she washed, ironed, and bundled clothes by hand, using a washboard and a clothesline.

Oseola never owned a car; she walked everywhere she went, pushing a shopping cart to the grocery store.

She did not own a television and only bought a small black-and-white set later in life to watch local news.

When her shoes wore out, she used black exterior tape to hold them together.

She opened her first bank account as a young girl. Every time she earned money from a bundle of laundry, she saved a portion of it.

While she only made a few dollars per bundle, her consistency across eight decades allowed compound interest to turn her pocket change into a small fortune.

In 1995, at the age of 87, arthritis forced Oseola to retire.

When her banker showed her how much money she had accumulated, she decided she had more than enough to live on.

She wanted to use the rest to give young people the opportunity she was denied.

She blindsided the community by donating $150,000—the majority of her life savings—to the University of Southern Mississippi to fund scholarships for students in need, with a preference for African American applicants.
