Arizona’s famous Petrified Forest hides a surprising detail.

Most of these stone trees did not fossilize where they once stood.

More than 200 million years ago, during the Late Triassic, this landscape looked nothing like the desert seen today.

The region lay much closer to the equator. Huge river systems crossed a warm, humid landscape filled with ferns, horsetails, cycads, ginkgo relatives and towering gymnosperm trees.

When some of those trees died, floods and rivers carried their trunks downstream.

They accumulated in ancient channels and log jams, where sediment rapidly buried them and slowed their decay.

Then chemistry began to transform them.

Groundwater carrying dissolved silica — much of it derived from volcanic ash — entered the porous wood. Over time, silica crystallized inside the microscopic structure of the trees, while much of the original organic material disappeared.

The result was wood transformed largely into quartz, while still preserving astonishing details of its former life.

Iron, manganese, carbon and other impurities produced the reds, yellows, purples, browns and blacks that make some sections resemble enormous gemstones.

Millions of years later, uplift and erosion exposed those fossilized trunks again. Because quartz is extremely hard but brittle, many logs fractured into clean segments, sometimes giving them the strange appearance of having been cut with a giant saw.

Today, Petrified Forest National Park preserves one of the world’s greatest concentrations of fossil wood from Late Triassic ecosystems.

These are not simply dead trees lying exactly where an ancient forest once grew.

They are the remains of prehistoric trees carried by vanished rivers, buried beneath sediment, mineralized into stone — and finally returned to daylight after more than 200 million years.
