Obviously, I sell scented products, but this legislation is really important. And we just don’t have these kinds of protections here in the US cosmetic industry. Transparency is essential for informed choices. This is also why I have bought European makeup and hair products for years, they have higher standards for what ingredients are allowed in personal care products. I can also make any products unscented.

Two continents just put the chemicals on the label. We didn't.

Last month, on July 31, a law took effect across the European Union. The next day, August 1, Canada's version took effect too.

Both now require the same thing: 56 fragrance chemicals that used to hide inside one word have to be printed on the label by name. That brings the list from 24 to more than 80.

Here's the part that matters to us.

They made no exception for natural. Menthol. Vanillin. Camphor. Eucalyptus oil. Rose oil. Jasmine oil. Essential oils got their own entries on the list.

Nobody asked where the chemical came from. They asked what it does to people.

Meanwhile, in the United States, all of it is still one word. Fragrance. One ingredient or two hundred, you can't tell, and you're not meant to.

A woman in Toronto can now read a label and make a decision.

A woman in Ohio is still guessing.

Please share. Consumers cannot make informed choices about ingredients they are never told are there. Europe and Canada decided people deserved more information. The United States can too.

The new rules require listed fragrance allergens above 0.001% in leave on cosmetics or 0.01% in rinse off cosmetics. They do not require disclosure of the entire fragrance formula and apply to cosmetics, not cleaning or laundry products.
