Very specific steps are being taken here to keep our patients and residents protected from avian influenza. The strain that is currently circulating is far more pathogenic (contagious & widespread) than in years past. For example, CATS who consume "roadkill" and even live songbirds ARE at-risk. Cows, pigs and nearly every mammal species we live amongst have had lab-confirmed positive cases in the United States.

*LAB-confirmed means we aren't doing a quick test in-house. Currently that's not accurate. Lab analysis takes place at the Michigan DNR pathology lab and may also get sent onward to Ames, Iowa where the national lab is located. Any living animal can have this test performed. The animal doesn't need to be euthanized to have the test.

Something as minor as bird DANDER can spread this. That means we wear varying levels of PPE when/IF responding to cases. ALL bird patients are presumed positive because many waterfowl are asymptomatic carriers. So if you see us responding to help fishing line entanged waterfowl OR abandoned domestic ducks for example, don't be surprised if we're wearing this! It doesn't mean the bird is positive. It just means that we are employing BEST PRACTICES. Any animals living in the wild have exposure risks.

Good biosecurity and a proactive approach to minimizing disease spread amongst patients and ourselves is a priority here. And it always has been.

We wear glasses/googles, foot/hand protection and may dress fully OR partially in protective disposable clothing. This is followed by a decontamination protocol afterwards.

As you can imagine, it is time-consuming and expensive. We are not responding to presumed positive cases as there is very poor chance of recovery by the time the patient is showing severe neuro symptoms (which happens to be when most are reported).

Presumed positive cases need to be directed to the DNR for wildlife or other state agencies with those duties. We can always advise who you need to call provided clear video of the situation.

If you're attempting to handle wildlife who are sick or injured we recommend an N95 and disposable gloves as bare minimum protocol and your exposure risks should be considered first.
