The Glass Slipper Sanctuary

Mended Souls Massage Clinic
& Head/Scalp Sanctuary
Marshfield, MO

Long before the sun stretches her golden fingers across the sleepy town of Marshfield, there is a quiet little sanctuary where weary souls somehow always find their way.

No...

It isn't hidden behind towering castle walls.

There are no drawbridges.

No royal guards.

No horse-drawn carriages waiting below.

(Though wouldn't that be a lovely touch?)

Its story is even more enchanting than that.

It is nestled quietly on the third floor of the historic Old Marshfield Schoolhouse in Marshfield, Missouri—a building whose weathered brick walls have faithfully stood through generations of laughter, learning, changing seasons, and countless stories waiting to be told.

If those old walls could speak, they would tell of children racing through hallways with books tucked beneath their arms... teachers encouraging dreams... friendships formed at old wooden desks... and lessons that reached far beyond the classroom.

Today...

Those same hallways welcome a different kind of student.

People no longer climb those stairs carrying schoolbooks.

They climb them carrying invisible burdens.

Heavy hearts.
Tight shoulders.
Sleepless nights.
Anxiety.
Grief.
Exhaustion.

Questions that have no easy answers.

And something curious begins to happen with every step toward the third floor.

The outside world grows quieter.

The frantic pace of life begins to loosen its grip.

Breathing slows.

Shoulders begin to soften.

By the time they reach the door...

It almost feels as though they have stepped into another world.

Not a castle...

But a sanctuary.

Its name is Mended Souls Massage Clinic & Head/Scalp Sanctuary.

Some believe it is simply a massage clinic.

Those who have crossed its threshold know differently.

For hidden within its walls is something that cannot be purchased...

Cannot be bottled...

Cannot be packaged...

And can never be rushed.

Peace.

Legend whispers that if you look closely enough, you might catch the faint sparkle of a silver magic wand dancing through the room long after everyone has gone home.

Some say it belongs to a fairy.

Others insist it is merely sunlight catching crystal bottles.

But those who know Ali simply smile.

They know every therapeutic touch carries a little bit of magic.

Near the entrance rests an unexpected treasure.

Not a crown.

Not a jeweled necklace.

But a single glass slipper.

It quietly reminds every person who enters that fairy tales were never truly about finding a prince.

They were about discovering your worth after believing you had somehow lost it.

People often arrive apologizing.

"I'm sorry... I'm such a mess."

Ali smiles gently.

"No, sweetheart..."
"You're simply tired."

And then...

The sanctuary begins its quiet work.

There is no rushing here.

No one glancing repeatedly at the clock.

No feeling that someone else is waiting just beyond the door.

One of the first things guests discover is that Ali intentionally schedules only two clients each day.

People are often surprised.

"Only two?"
Yes.

Only two.

Not because she couldn't welcome more.

Not because there isn't enough demand.

But because she made a promise to herself many years ago.

Healing would never become an assembly line.

She refused to become one more place where people felt like another name squeezed into a calendar.

Every appointment is protected.

Every soul is honored.

Every person is given the gift so few of us receive anymore...

Time.

Time to exhale.

Time to be heard.

Time to simply be.

Because healing rarely follows the hands of a clock.

Sometimes it begins with a sigh that has waited months to be released.

Sometimes it arrives through unexpected laughter.

Sometimes through peaceful silence.

Sometimes through tears that have patiently waited years for a safe place to fall.

There is no stopwatch for that.

No timer for peace.

No appointment book that can predict the exact moment a weary nervous system finally whispers...

"I think I'm safe now."

For more than twenty-eight years, Ali has learned something remarkable.

The body remembers.

Long after the mind insists we've moved on...

The shoulders continue carrying yesterday's burdens.

The neck remembers every stressful conversation.

The jaw quietly holds words left unspoken.

The scalp cradles thoughts that have refused to rest.

Even our feet...

Those faithful companions that have carried us through every season of life...

Tell stories no one else can hear.

Here...

Those stories are gently listened to.

Warm herbal tea welcomes each guest before the session even begins.

Soft music drifts through the sanctuary like a familiar lullaby.

The fragrance of calming botanicals fills the air.

Every light.

Every texture.

Every carefully chosen detail.

Every thoughtful touch.

Has been placed with intention.

Because details matter.

People matter.

Healing matters.

Then the therapeutic touch begins.

Tight muscles slowly surrender.

Busy minds finally grow quiet.

Breathing becomes deeper.

Foreheads soften.

The nervous system, so accustomed to standing guard, begins remembering something it may have forgotten long ago.

What safety feels like.
What peace feels like.
What it feels like...
To finally rest.

Sometimes laughter fills the room.
Sometimes silence says everything.

Both are welcome.

Sometimes tears quietly appear.
No explanation is ever expected.

Healing rarely asks permission before it arrives.

What people often discover...
Is that somewhere between the warm tea...

The therapeutic touch...

The quiet stillness...

And the old schoolhouse walls that have witnessed generations before them...

They remembered themselves again.

Not the version the world demanded.

Not the exhausted version that kept giving until there was little left.

But the one God lovingly created before life convinced them they had to carry everything alone.

Sometimes the greatest healing isn't fixing what is broken.

Sometimes...
It is simply remembering you were never meant to bear every burden by yourself.

When guests finally descend those old wooden stairs once more, they carry something no one else can see.

A slower breath.
A quieter mind.
A lighter step.
A softer heart.

And the gentle reminder that they, too, are worthy of being cared for.

Perhaps the silver magic wand truly does exist after all.

Or perhaps kindness simply sparkles when it is given without hurry.

Because at Mended Souls, healing has never been measured by the number of appointments in a day.

It has always been measured...

Mending one soul at a time.

Behind the weathered brick walls of a century-old schoolhouse...

Above the echoes of classrooms where children once learned their lessons...

Another kind of learning quietly takes place.

Here, weary hearts remember how to rest.

Busy minds remember how to be still.

And burdened souls remember they were never meant to carry life's weight alone.

The old schoolhouse is still teaching.

Only now...
It is mending one soul at a time.

Welcome to Mended Souls Massage Clinic & Head/Scalp Sanctuary.

Where every soul deserves a little mending. ..Ali

Before My First Client Arrives...

An early morning ritual on the third floor of the historic Marshfield Schoolhouse.

To some...
Preparing for the workday may feel like another item on the to-do list.

Something to hurry through.

Perhaps even begrudgingly.

Not so for me.

Each morning, I arrive nearly two hours before my first client.

As I ascend the stairs to the third floor of the historic Marshfield Schoolhouse and unlock the door to what I affectionately call my little healing sanctuary, I pause for just a moment.

People occasionally ask me why I call it that.

The answer is simple.

Because this space represents healing for me, too.

Not because I have all the answers...

And certainly not because I pretend to be a healer.

I don't.

What I do bring is twenty-eight years as a licensed therapeutic massage therapist...

Years of continuing education...

Thousands upon thousands of hours of hands-on experience...

Learning to recognize the subtle language of the body.

Listening to muscles.
Noticing the slightest nuances.

Learning the difference between tissue asking to be encouraged...and tissue asking to be respected.

Even the feet have stories to tell.

Perhaps that's one of the reasons reflexology has become one of my most requested services.

It's remarkable what we discover when we slow down long enough to listen to what our bodies have been trying to communicate all along.

Like many of my clients, I've experienced seasons of heartache...

Uncertainty...

Loss...

And the exhaustion of life.

Perhaps that's why this little healing sanctuary means so much to me.

It reminds me each morning to begin again.

To breathe.
To be grateful.
To prepare a peaceful atmosphere with intention.

Preparing this sanctuary has become a quiet ritual of mine.

Straightening the freshly laundered linens.

Checking the warmth of the towels and spa wrap.

Steeping a fresh pot of Mended Souls Organic Tea...
A comforting blend of lavender and chamomile, thoughtfully chosen for their calming qualities.

Adjusting the lighting.
Selecting the music.

Looking around one last time...

Making certain every thoughtful detail has been prepared with my next client in mind.

Then...

Before the first knock at my door...

I prepare something just as important.

Myself.

I quiet my own mind.

I leave the distractions of my day outside the door.
Because when someone entrusts me with their care...

They deserve more than my hands.
They deserve my complete attention.

My presence.
My focus.
My experience.

And my heart.

One of my favorite moments happens before a treatment ever begins.

A client steps inside...
Looks around...

Smiles...
And says...

"Oh, wow...I had a class in this very room!"

Then the stories begin.

Favorite teachers.

Childhood memories.

Friendships.

Laughter.

Life.

A few quiet moments later...
Almost without fail...
They'll quietly say...

"This doesn't look anything like it used to."

Followed by words that never grow old...

"It's so peaceful in here."

I always smile.

Because that has been my hope from the very beginning.

That before I ever begin a Therapeutic Massage...

Before I ever begin a Head/Scalp Sanctuary...

My clients begin relaxing.

Sometimes it's only after they settle onto my heated hydraulic massage table, thoughtfully layered to feel like a warm cloud, that they realize just how much tension they've been carrying.

Or discover aches and pains they had quietly learned to live with.

One comment I hear time and time again still makes me smile...

"This is the most comfortable massage table I've ever experienced."

Truthfully...
That was exactly my intention.

From the very first warm sip of tea...
To the warmth beneath you...
To the peaceful surroundings..

Nothing has been left to chance.

Everything has been intentionally prepared with one person in mind.

You.

Your appointment isn't simply another time slot on my calendar.
It's time intentionally reserved...

Exclusively for you.

Whether you choose my Therapeutic Massage or my Head/Scalp Sanctuary, it is my sincere hope that you'll give yourself permission...

To relax.
To renew.
To restore.

I've always found it remarkable how quickly our bodies respond when they're finally given permission to slow down.

Breathing becomes slower.
Muscles begin to soften.
The mind grows quieter.

The body gradually shifts away from the constant demands of "go...go...go" and begins returning to what it was wonderfully designed to do...

Rest.
Restore.
Repair.

Perhaps the greatest lesson I've learned through the years is this...

When we make room to care for ourselves...

We're not taking something away from the people we love.

We're giving them the very best of who we are.

A calmer heart.
A quieter mind.
A body that's finally been allowed to rest.
A spirit gently renewed.

Perhaps that's why I've come to believe...
Self-care isn't selfish.

It's necessary.

My hope in sharing this isn't simply to tell you how I prepare for your visit.

It's that somewhere along the way...

You might recognize just how much your own body has been asking you to slow down.

To breathe.
To receive care.

And to simply be.

And together...
We create the opportunity for your body to do what it has longed to do all along...

Mend.

Because after all...

Coat Check

by Ali Wood
Author • Lyricist
Massage Therapist

Well...

I've been thinking again.

(Imagine that.)

It occurred to me that before we go any further...

I'd like to ask something of you.

Just for a moment...

Picture your favorite winter coat.

Really picture it.

What color is it?

Soft cream?

Classic black?

A cheerful red?

Or perhaps that perfectly worn denim coat you've loved for years.

Is it wool?

Leather?

Down-filled?

Long enough to wrap around your legs on a bitter January morning?

Does it have deep pockets where forgotten treasures still hide?

A cozy hood?

Buttons?

A zipper?

Can you almost feel its familiar weight resting across your shoulders?

Good.

Now...

Imagine slipping your arms from the sleeves.

Hanging it carefully on the hook beside the door.

Taking one last glance...

Then walking into the room without it.

Hold that picture in your mind.

I have a feeling we'll come back to it.

Because lately...

I've been paying closer attention to something.

Not what people are wearing.

Not what they drive.

Not even necessarily what they say.

I've been paying attention to what they carry.

You see...

I have this little theory.

Every one of us walks into another person's life wearing an invisible coat.

Some coats are stitched together with gratitude.

Others with excitement.

Some are lined with hope.

Others have pockets overflowing with worry.

Some are woven with disappointment...

Heartache...

Fear...

Loneliness...

Or simply the exhausting business of trying to keep all the plates spinning.

Life has a way of handing each of us a rather bountiful bouquet of...

Well...

"Life stuff."

Yet I've always admired those rare souls who somehow leave others feeling lighter than when they arrived...

Even while quietly carrying a few wilted blossoms of their own.

There's something profoundly beautiful about people who hand out bouquets of hope while still tending to their own tender places.

Then another thought quietly found me.

Some coats...

We've been wearing for so long...

We've forgotten they were never meant to become part of who we are.

Some were stitched together in childhood.

Others during seasons of heartbreak...

Disappointment...

Loss...

Rejection...

Or simply doing our very best to survive.

Perhaps they once served a purpose.

Perhaps they wrapped themselves around a heart that desperately needed protection.

Psychology tells us our remarkable minds are designed to protect us.

We develop coping patterns that help us survive difficult seasons.

In those moments...

Those patterns may have been exactly what we needed.

But healing has a gentle way of asking another question.

Does this coat still fit?

Children eventually outgrow their winter coats.

Perhaps adults outgrow emotional ones too.

The heartbreaking part is that we sometimes continue wearing coats we've long since outgrown...

Not because they still fit...

But because they've become familiar.

Somewhere along the way...

We confused familiar with safe.

Maybe that's why some people struggle to trust.

To receive kindness.

To offer encouragement.

Perhaps they're not trying to be difficult.

Perhaps they're simply wearing a coat that once helped them survive.

A coat they've forgotten they have permission to remove.

Psychologists even have a name for something else I've quietly observed over the past twenty-six years as a massage therapist.

They call it emotional contagion.

Research tells us we begin reading another person within seconds.

Before we've exchanged more than a greeting...

Before we've learned one another's names...

Our brains are already asking...

"Am I safe here?"

Every day someone climbs three flights of old wooden stairs into the healing sanctuary I've lovingly created at Mended Souls Massage Clinic.

Almost without fail...

When I gently ask,

"Where do you think you may be carrying too much?"
..their eyes begin to glisten.

Rarely are we talking only about a shoulder.

A neck.

Or a lower back.

More often than not...

We're talking about life.

Responsibilities.
Relationships.
Grief.
Fear.
Disappointment.

The quiet weight of trying to hold everything together.

Muscles often tell the story long before words ever do.

The beautiful irony isn't lost on me.

As I write these words...

A sign is being printed for my clinic asking every guest to be mindful of the energy they bring into this healing sanctuary.

I thought I was creating that sign for my clients.

Now I'm beginning to wonder if God was quietly creating it...

For me.

Because this story isn't really about them.

It's about me.

Whether I'm standing in the grocery store...

Getting my nails done...

Thanking the cashier...

Speaking with a waitress who's had a long day...

Answering the telephone...

Or welcoming someone into the healing sanctuary God has entrusted to my care...

Every encounter becomes another opportunity to quietly ask myself...

"Ali...

What coat are you wearing today?"

Before I greet my first client...

Before I smooth the linens.

Warm the towels and spa wraps.

Steep the hot tea.

Dim the lights.

Choose the music.

Prepare this healing sanctuary...

I begin with my own coat check.

"Lord...

You are Our Ultimate Healer.

I am simply Your hands.

Together, You and I can prepare a healing sanctuary.

I'll prepare the room...

You prepare the hearts.

Guide my hands to the muscles that have faithfully carried too much for too long.

May my years of experience provide comfort, confidence and compassionate care while You do the deeper healing only You can do.

May my words bring comfort.
May my silence bring peace.
May my presence calm a weary nervous system.

And Lord...

Before I greet my first client...

Help me check my own coat."

Because every person deserves more than my technique.

They deserve my presence.

My respect.
My compassion.
My full attention.

If you've been carrying more than your heart was ever meant to hold...

Perhaps this is your gentle reminder.

Maybe it's time to hang your own invisible coat on the hook...

If only for a little while.

If that speaks to your heart...

I'd be honored to welcome you into Mended Souls Massage Clinic.

Whether you choose a 90+ minute Therapeutic Massage or spend more than two hours immersed in my Head & Scalp Sanctuary...

My prayer is simple.

That you'll leave feeling lighter than when you arrived.

Not because every burden disappeared...

But because someone helped you carry it for a little while.

So before I close...

Let's return to that winter coat hanging quietly beside the door.

Can you still see it?

Good.

Now imagine tucked inside one of its pockets are....

Disappointment...
Hurry...
Resentment...
Fear...
Unmet expectations...

Or simply an old emotional coat you've long since outgrown.

Leave it there.

Walk into the room anyway.

Lighter.
Freer.
More present.

Perhaps that's what God invites us to do every single day.

Not become someone else.

Simply choose what we'll wear.

"Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." — Colossians 3:12

So do tell...

If you were standing before that imaginary coat rack today...

What might you leave hanging on the hook?

As for me...

I'm leaving disappointment.

I'm choosing hope.
Kindness.
Grace.
A little sass.
A hearty laugh.

And enough light to leave someone else's day just a little brighter than I found it.

After all...

Tomorrow morning...

We all get another coat check.
