I come from women
who kept time by the mountains,
by the slow turning of seasons,
by frost on the garden rows,
by the first whippoorwill calling at dusk.
Their hands smelled of rosemary and soil,
of bread dough and woodsmoke.
They stitched warmth into winter
and stories into long evenings
where laughter carried through the holler.
My granny’s shawl still remembers her,
the quiet rhythm of her needles,
the patience of mountain women
who knew how to make something lasting
from a length of yarn and a little faith.
My mother placed an October stone
in the hands of my daughter,
like passing down a small sun,
a promise that she belongs
to a long line of women
who know how to grow things.
Women who sing while they work,
who tuck seeds into the earth
and children into their arms
with the very same tenderness.
And now my daughter stands beside me
in the old light of these hills,
wearing the shine of her grandmother’s love
while I wear the warmth of mine.
The mountains keep our stories.
In gardens, in song, in shawls,
in the bright October fire of a child’s small necklace.
And in the quiet knowing
that Appalachian women
are always raising the next one.
