Appreciate everyday 💕
When I come to the end of the road
And the sun has set for me
I want no tears on a gloom-filled room
Why cry for a soul set free.
Miss me a little and not for long
And not with your head bowed low
Remember the love that we once shared
Miss me - but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
And each must go alone
It's all a part of the master plan
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick of heart
Go to the friend we know
And bury your sorrows in doing good deeds
Miss me - but let me go.

In September 1986, 1LT Sean Michael McDermott, a distinguished graduate of UNH Army ROTC Class of 1985 and UNH Presidential Scholar, was a proud medical platoon commander with the 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) at Fort Drum, New York.
Known for its “Climb to Glory” motto, elite mountain training, and historic WWII roots, it was the ideal assignment for this brilliant, energetic, hard-charging 1LT destined for greatness.
But before the Army realized the contributions Sean would inevitably make, tragedy struck. During a unit event, Sean suffered a life-changing accident. The quick action of his well-trained medics saved his life, but drastically changed its trajectory.
For the past 40 years, we honor Sean’s extraordinary climb to glory—serving his country by inspiring all who witnessed his unwavering bravery and courage.
We remember his keen intellect, leadership, charisma, charm, and most especially, his sense of humor.
Though his dreams of serving in a line unit and attaining a medical degree to care for sick and wounded patriots were tragically derailed, his climb to glory took a different turn—one that has had an equal impact on everyone around him.
Through unmatched fortitude, passion, and humor, Sean became a beacon of hope to disabled veterans, their families, and caregivers. His service may not have taken a traditional form, but for over 40 years, he spread courage and bravery throughout Walter Reed and the many VA hospitals and therapy centers where he lived and received treatment.
Sean gave the gift of himself to those who endured unthinkable struggles because they pledged to serve their country.
He was, and ALWAYS will be, remembered as the wonderful leader and friend who gave all he could to all he knew, FOR ALL HIS LIFE.
“This We’ll Defend.”
