Here are a few things you should know about DPN — Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra, often referred to as skin tags.

They are benign, usually brown or black, raised growths that commonly appear on the face, neck, and upper body, especially in people with darker skin tones.

Treatment removes the visible growths, but it does not stop new ones from forming in the future.

During treatment, topical numbing cream is used beforehand to help keep you comfortable. Treatment can often be completed in one visit, although clients with numerous DPNs may need multiple sessions.

After treatment, the area may temporarily appear darker, slightly swollen, red, or crusted. Again, this is temporary.

You should always allow the scabs to fall off naturally. Picking at them can increase the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and possible scarring.

The skin normally takes about 7–14 days to heal. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is very important because it helps protect the skin and lowers the risk of post-treatment discoloration.

Clients are also instructed to keep the area clean and dry, avoid picking or scrubbing, and follow all aftercare instructions given by their esthetician.

Another plus? Treating DPN can make a noticeable difference in the overall appearance of the skin and can even give the face a smoother, more youthful look.
