I'm so excited to be participating in this again! I'm planning to do a new recipe, and one of my favorites!

It takes place right here in Chelsea, at the Conservation Club!

Most people think elderberries "boost immunity." However, the science is more interesting than that.

Elderberries are packed with anthocyanins, these are the deep purple compounds that give the berries their color. In laboratory studies, elderberry extracts have been shown to interfere with certain viruses by making it harder for them to attach to cells and replicate once infection begins. Researchers have also observed immune modulating effects that may help support the body's response during viral challenges. This is likely why we see multiple clinical trials where elderberry extracts reduce the severity and duration of the common cold and flu. In other words, elderberry isn't going to always prevent you from being sick, but it gives your body the tools to recover and fight off illness.

Cinnamon brings a whole new set of tools to the ballgame. I use Ceylon Cinnamon, which helps fight inflammation: Antioxidants help reduce chronic inflammation linked to various diseases. It exhibits natural antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. And works as a digestive aid: Traditionally used to help ease gas, bloating, and mild gastrointestinal upset.

No herb can guarantee you won't get sick. But understanding how plants interact with the body is a lot more fascinating than simply calling them "immune boosters."

This is also why elderberry syrup doesnt always prevent you from getting sick, but in my experience it always helps my symptoms and recovering more quickly. I will always put these two herbs in my elderberry syrup! It's the combo I swear by!
