Not All Flaky Scalps Are Dandruff
Dry scalp, dandruff, psoriasis, and eczema can all cause itching and flaking, but they are very different conditions and should be treated differently.
✨ Dry Scalp
Usually caused by a lack of moisture. Flakes tend to be small, dry, and white. The scalp may feel tight, especially during colder months or after using harsh products.
✨ Dandruff
Often caused by excess oil, irritation, or an overgrowth of a naturally occurring yeast on the scalp. Flakes are typically larger and may appear oily or yellowish. The scalp can be itchy and irritated.
✨ Psoriasis
An autoimmune condition that causes thick, raised plaques covered with silvery scales. It can extend beyond the hairline and may be accompanied by burning, itching, or discomfort.
✨ Eczema
A skin condition that can cause redness, inflammation, itching, and dry patches on the scalp. The skin may feel sensitive and become irritated by certain products or environmental triggers.
What helps one condition may make another worse. That’s why identifying the cause of your symptoms is so important before reaching for a treatment. Your scalp is skin, just like the skin on your face. It deserves care that’s tailored to what it actually needs.
While scalp treatments can help support scalp health, persistent, severe, or worsening symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare provider or dermatologist.
That’s why I always take the time to look at each scalp individually rather than assuming everyone needs the same treatment.
