I’ve recently started posting longer hair for the commercial salon client appeal. But many people were asking me why I didn’t really post so much long hair before. The answer is simple… I was applying the “A Fortiori” principle to my page. This is the principle that translated means “from the stronger or greater position”. Let me give you an example, if you saw somebody jump 100 yards from the end zone of a football field to the other end zone, would you need to see them jump from the end zone of the football field to the 50 yard line to know they could do it? Of course not. If a lesser is true then it applies “a fortiori” to the greater. I observe the masses and do the opposite & post what you don’t really see much of on social media. What most are uncomfortable with, unsure of, or simply scared to do in terms of bobs, pixies, and even fashion forward or creative work. Why? Because it shows that the ability and technical knowledge to properly do “that” makes doing all the commercial long hair stuff a piece of cake… hence “A Fortiori”.

This is what most people have been taught that “elevation” and “degrees” means or how it works. And unfortunately reiterated now on social media by so many. And this is completely wrong. This is why so many people struggle with weight lines, and steps and ledges, etc. So let me explain, if I ask “what is 0°?” most answer “straight down to the floor”, “no elevation” etc… if I ask, “what does 90° mean” about half say “straight out of the head following the head shape”. Then comes the magic question, “if 90° moves why is 0° always to the floor”. And the answer is, that IT’s NOT… the most important thing to understand is that degrees DOES NOT MEAN a point in space like in the images above. Degrees also DOES NOT MEAN an “angle” like “45° angle”. Another huge miss teaching of cosmetology school. So then what is the “degrees”? Degrees is a measure of elevation of hair at the root. It has nothing to do with the end of the hair is pointing. If you hold up a vertical section every part of that section has a different degree. This is why one of the biggest things we teach is that haircutting is ALL about what happens at the root, not at the end of the hair. What we see at the end of the hair is a result of what we made the root do. If you have a step or ledge like so many when they’re creating graduation, it’s because you made that root do something. That “something” was pull into negative degrees, in other words below 0°. If you ever see the root of a section smearing onto the head, you’re holding the hair below 0°. So do this visual test. Hold any hair straight off the head meaning 90°, then bring it down and stop exactly when the root of that hair touches the scalp. That is 0°. And you’ll notice that it’s a perfect right angle from 90°… Obviously this requires a little more explaining than teaching that I can do on a post. But understanding what degrees really means and how it works is vital and will completely change everything in haircutting for you. We cover all of this in depth in our seminars. So if you’re looking for true technical cutting education reach out. Would love to work with you…
