We’re here, kid! Two months away from the last lap. To say that I’m proud of you, Ha’san, would be an understatement; to say tears don’t form from every single thought of you leaving for college soon would be a lie. Motherhood started with you, son, and God made sure your graduation day was extra special. Just as I get to watch you cross that stage, seven hours later you get to witness your mom do the same. 🥹🙏🏽👩🏽‍🎓👨🏽‍🎓

Today in clinicals, I was reminded how precious life is and how, in a split second, everything can change. My patient came in for an oppharectomy (removal of her o***y) with possible cancer staging due to a mass the size of a basketball (no lie) on her o***y. The patient was in her 30s. During the time-out (where the team verify the patient’s identity among other things before the start of the procedure), I found myself praying for her instead. I knew by the end of the procedure, there was a possibility my patient’s life would change forever.

LADIES, hear me well: STOP putting your wellness exams off! LISTEN to your body. Go to every appointment, especially the uncomfortable ones. BE OPEN with your gynecologist. If you can’t talk to your gyno like you would talk to your bestie, (replace her). YES, you should be that comfortable with her. Your body is your temple. Treat it like ROYALTY. If something feels off, listen to that little voice in your head.

Today could have easily had a different outcome for my patient, but by the grace of GOD, the tumor was benign. I’ve scrubbed into multiple specialties during my clinical rotation, and GYN is the only specialty I feel super connected to. While others in the operating room may see the case as just another procedure on today’s to-do list, I always SEE the patient.
