Why do stylists always ask if you've used box dye?

The top section is virgin hair. The lower section contains previous black box color. Even though it's the same head of hair and the same lightener, the results are dramatically different.

Virgin hair generally lifts cleaner, brighter, and more predictably. Previous box color can leave behind layers of artificial pigment that are often resistant to lifting and may expose unwanted warm tones.
