Enslaved people were notified of their freedom over two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Today's celebration of Juneteenth is even more special as the National Independence Act signed on June 17th, 2021, has officially commemorated Juneteenth as a national federal holiday!
