Considering bringing a loved one with you to assist during your aftercare?
Let’s take a moment to unpack a few important factors to help you make an informed decision.

First, you’ll need to determine the role you want your loved one to play. Will they be your primary caregiver, or would you prefer they simply provide emotional support while your aftercare is handled by a professional service provider? While some loved ones are fully committed and capable of taking on a caregiver role, others may not be prepared for the responsibility and that’s okay.

If your loved one agrees to serve as your caregiver, the following expectations should be clearly discussed, considered, and understood in advance:
• Availability to assist you on all required days
• Accommodations you’ll be responsible for covering during their stay
• Knowledge or experience in caregiving
• Ability to recognize warning signs and respond promptly in an emergency
• Comfortable with taking vitals, providing medication reminders, and maintaining logs
• Understanding of proper sanitation and infection prevention
• Willingness to assist with personal care such as toileting, showering, and managing bodily fluids
• Knowledge of how to properly clean and maintain surgical garments
• Most importantly, the mental, physical, and emotional capacity to fully support you during recovery

Lastly, always prepare a backup plan in case your loved one is unable to follow through at the last minute, it happens more often than you’d think. This is why having emergency funds is essential. Should your caregiver back out, you will need immediate access to a recovery house or mobile aftercare services.

Planning ahead ensures your recovery remains safe, supported, and stress free.

WHAT DOES A GOOD NURSE/CAREGIVER CONSIST OF?

A high quality caregiver should be skilled, knowledgeable, and properly trained in all responsibilities related to your aftercare. They should never perform tasks outside of their professional scope. Their role is not only to assist with your care but to educate you throughout your stay, ensuring you return home confident, informed, and prepared for a smooth recovery.

A caregiver’s duties begin the moment you book services and submit your deposit. From that point forward they should be able to answer any questions you may have, provide reliable resources, and help you feel fully supported. While you are in their care your caregiver is your companion and should always act as such—maintaining professionalism while treating you with dignity and respect at all times.

Your caregiver should provide a clean, sanitized, safe, and welcoming environment at all times. They should be fully comfortable assisting you with any personal needs including toileting, showering, or managing bodily fluids. Open communication is essential and a dedicated caregiver will check in with you after services are rendered. Typically 1–2 post-op follow ups to ensure you made it home safely and are progressing well.

Securing the right caregiver is EQUALLY as important as choosing the right surgeon. Cost should never be the primary deciding factor for your aftercare. Take your time, compare providers, ask questions, and above all—trust your instincts.
