True story: I didn’t sing for 30 years. My poor, listless pineal glad just sat still, waiting for some action in its placid little puddle.

I loved singing as a kid, but in 4th grade I had solo in front of the whole school and I totally choked. My little mind was a harsh governor, and it somehow succeeded in shutting down the whole activity FOR 30 DAMN YEARS.

I thankfully lost that pesky thing (my mind) and finally started singing again at the tender age of 39. The spirit molecule helped me remember how, as did the love and encouragement of a man who can hear me sounding like a seagull that just hit puberty and still seem to enjoy it.

If it hadn’t been for hus-bro and our close friend the quantum field, I would NEVER have been caught by the iPhone camera singing made up lyrics in the jungle. In fact, I probably wouldn’t been caught singing at all.

Let that be a lesson to you, perfectionism is not a good thing. It’s not some cute humble-brag to drop at a job interview, it’s actually a really messed up thing to do to yourself.

Perfectionism leads to silencing yourself. It means that a lot of your creations never see an audience. It’s a contraction recipe for the soul.

And when your perfectionism flares — that person you’re beating up on? That happens to be someone I care about, so speak to them kindly, please.

And for an extra good time, sing to their pineal gland.
