Middleborough Firefighters Local 3653
by Alice Elwell
February 23, 2026 โ Town Manager James McGrail has announced that all Town buildings and schools will remain closed tomorrow as Middleborough grapples with a powerful norโeaster. The closure is intended to give the Department of Public Works (DPW) the necessary space to clear roadways and restore the town to normal operations.
Fire Chief Owen Thompson reported that DPW crews are working around the clock to maintain access for emergency vehicles despite the relentless weather.
โDPW crews are out in full force doing the best they can to keep the roads open for public safety purposes,โ Chief Thompson stated. โBetween snow falling and drifting, it is keeping them extremely busy.โ
Chief Thompson strongly urged motorists to stay off the roads, noting that even emergency responders are facing difficulties. "DPW, police, and fire have all had vehicles stuck while trying to maintain public safety in the town. We would appreciate it if any and all non-essential travelers remain off the roads at this point in time," Chief Thompson said.
Crashes and stuck vehicles prevent emergency crews from clearing snow and keeping the power on. Teams are currently responding to a surge in storm-related calls, including auto accidents, downed lines, fallen trees, and slips and falls.
Utility Update: Middleborough Gas & Electric Department
Dani Taylor, spokesperson for MGED, confirmed that while there are isolated outages, the town has avoided a widespread blackout so far. The current outage map shows just over 150 outages, and all power and tree crews have been mobilized.
While the MGED Administrative Office is closed today due to the storm, phone lines remain open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. for customer support at 508-947-1371. If outages occur, MGED crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to restore service.
Officials are urging residents to stay safe and stay warm by prioritizing the following:
โข Downed Wires: Stay as far away as possible from downed wires or damaged electrical equipment. Always assume they are live and dangerous. Report them immediately to MGED at 508-947-3023.
โข Gas Meter Safety: Do not plow or pile snow against natural gas meters, as this can damage the piping and cause a leak. Gently brush snow and ice off meters using a soft broom; do not hit the equipment.
โข Gas Leaks: If you suspect a natural gas leak, leave the area immediately. From a safe location, call 911 or 508-947-1535.
โข Power Outages: For electric emergencies, call 508-947-3023 or report power outages at mged.com/203/Outage-Center.
Dangerous Conditions to Persist
โข The forecast predicts that the storm will remain intense for at least the next few hours, with dangerous whiteout conditions continuing across Middleborough. Residents are advised to stay indoors and avoid all unnecessary travel.
