Fast food? 🚫 Hard no for me. (They have never even had an oz of it)

All those big-name chains? Nope. Not interested.

But do I recreate the foods my kids love at home? Of course I do. 😂 Just the farm-to-table, know-what’s-in-it version.

My boys LOVE chicken nuggets (we usually do olive oil), so tonight we decided to try something a little different—the old-fashioned tallow deep fry.

Andddd… we’re hooked. 🙌

Farm-raised chicken tenders, coated and fried crispy in tallow, with red potatoes we literally pulled out of our own field. 🐓🥔🌱

THIS is my kind of “fast food.”

And can we talk about this little fry pot?! I am loving it. 😂 It’s the perfect size, keeps everything contained, and I have a feeling it’s about to get a whole lot of use around here.

There’s just something incredibly satisfying about recreating the foods your kids love while knowing where the ingredients came from—and when the chicken and potatoes came from your own land, it makes dinner taste even better. ❤️

Apparently The Hippie Farmer has a drive-thru now. You just have to raise it, grow it, harvest it, prep it, cook it… so it’s not particularly fast. 😂✌️

I have HAD a day. 😂

I spent pretty much the entire day working on our yellow pear tomatoes 🍅—processing, preserving, and trying to keep up with everything the garden is still throwing at us.

And because apparently tomatoes weren’t enough, we also started destemming our Himrod grapes to make W**E. 🍇🍷

Yes… w**e.

At this point, I’m pretty confident I will not be adding “w**emaker” to my résumé anytime soon. 😂 There are a LOT of grapes on a bunch, and every single one apparently needs my personal attention.

But that’s homestead life. Every year we grow something new, preserve something differently, learn another skill, make a few mistakes, and somehow convince ourselves to try even more the following year. 🌿

So here’s to trying new things in 2026—even if the w**e ends up being better suited for salad dressing. 😂🍷

And after today, I’m ready to trade the smell of tomatoes and grapes for pumpkin, apple, spice, and all the FALL scents. 🍂🎃

What a good holiday weekend. ❤️🌿

It was one of those weekends where we got SO much done, but still made time to slow down and enjoy being together.

We disbudded the calf 🐮, picked lots of fresh vegetables from the garden 🥕🍅🌶️, tackled farm chores, and spent some much-needed time together as a family. There’s always something that needs doing around here, but I wouldn’t trade these busy, beautiful days for anything.

Now we’re heading into a brand-new week feeling accomplished, grateful, and ready to make it an AMAZING one. ✌️🌻

Harvest season looks so beautiful in pictures… baskets overflowing with vegetables, colorful jars lined up on the counter, and all that homegrown goodness coming out of the garden.

But let me tell you — that is NOT the whole story. 😂

The part nobody shows you is the kitchen completely taken over by jars, the pressure canner that basically lives on the stove, vegetables covering every available surface, and the cherry tomatoes slowly rotting in the refrigerator because apparently there IS such a thing as too many cherry tomatoes. 🤦‍♀️🍅

Everything in the garden seems to become ready at the EXACT SAME TIME. Meanwhile, the animals still need feeding, the farm needs tending, the store needs stocking, orders need filling, kids need us… and somehow we’re supposed to find enough hours in the day to preserve it all.

Harvest season is beautiful. It’s rewarding. It makes me incredibly grateful for everything this little piece of land gives us.

But it is also exhausting, messy, overwhelming and very, very real.

🐓❤️ Keke & Speaker ❤️🐓

If there was ever a chicken made especially for Keke, I think it would have to be Speaker, her little Kikiriki rooster. 😂

This girl absolutely LOVES this tiny rooster. She carries him around, hangs out with him, talks to him… and somehow Speaker just goes along with all of it. He may be one of the smallest chickens on the farm, but his personality is definitely NOT small!

A few fun facts about Kikiriki chickens:

🐓 They’re tiny micro-bantam chickens, often weighing under a pound.

🌴 Kikirikis are especially associated with Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, where these little chickens have a big following. (BackYard Chickens⁠)

🐣 They come in all kinds of colors, feather patterns and body types. They aren’t currently a standardized breed, which is part of why you can see so much variation between them. (Creatures⁠)

📣 And don’t let that tiny body fool you — the roosters still CROW! Some of these little guys have a surprisingly big voice for such a teeny bird. 😂

❤️ They’re often kept as ornamental chickens and pets because of their small size and big personalities.

But around here, Speaker has one very important job…

Watching our kids form relationships with the animals is one of my absolute favorite parts of raising them on the farm. It doesn’t get much sweeter than a little farm girl and her pocket-sized rooster.

🥔 NEW ON THE BLOG: The Potato Harvest That Surprised Us! 🥔

Sometimes the things you don’t plan turn out to be the biggest surprises on the farm. 🌱

We didn’t even plan on growing potatoes this year! We started with about 2 pounds of organic red potatoes, let them chit in the window, found a little patch of ground to stick them in…and hoped for the best.

Well, those 2 pounds turned into an estimated 50–100 POUNDS of potatoes! 🤯🥔

And after 14 years of trying potatoes in bags, pallet boxes, and different setups, guess what worked the best?

👉 Planting them straight in the ground—the good old-fashioned way.

The kids helped dig them up, which basically turns potato harvesting into one giant buried-treasure hunt. Some were tiny, some were perfect, and a few were HUGE!

Farm life is always teaching us something, and this harvest definitely taught us a few things we’ll be doing differently next year.
