With all the discussion about overdevelopment in Newport, this walk-in tattoo seemed especially relevant. Jimmy’s Saloon, established in 1976 on Memorial Boulevard, was a Newport landmark for decades before being replaced by a boutique hotel.

For my client, Jimmy’s represents a different chapter of Newport—visiting friends, couch surfing, and the kind of local places that gave the city its character. Today, he brings his own family to Newport and stays in hotels that often require reservations months in advance.

This tattoo isn’t really about a building. It’s about memory, nostalgia, and the question many Newport residents are asking: How do we support tourism while holding onto the places and character that made people fall in love with the city in the first place?

Clowns seem to be a love or hate subject for people.
