Hey, y'all! Diana here! It's been a while and I apologize for our absence. We've had SO many disruptions this past year. BUT--I feel we may be getting back on track. We have a new intern who is young, bright and fun and who has great energy! Yay! I have invested a good bit of time in training my new assistant, and she and I have been working together on setting up an editorial schedule for our Terressentials newsletter. We've also been learning how to process our in-house photos with assistance from our cool, new AI friend and I'm very excited that we're saving SO much time (hours!) over our old time-consuming--color tweaking, sharpening, re-sizing, adjusting this and that--photo shop processing! (Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks!) Finally, a most welcome, new and positive step forward for our small business! In a decisive bid to halt the relentless march of suburban sprawl, Henderson County commissioners voted unanimously to advance a landmark $25 million conservation initiative designed to protect the region’s agricultural heritage. Rather than directly allocating the funds, local officials chose to put the fate of the county’s disappearing countryside directly into the hands of the electorate by placing a $25 million general obligation bond referendum on the November 3, 2026 ballot. If approved by voters, this massive financial reservoir will be weaponized against rapid urbanization through the purchase of voluntary conservation easements—effectively paying local farmers to permanently surrender their development rights while retaining full ownership to work, lease or inherit their ancestral lands.

The high-stakes measure comes as North Carolina faces a critical existential crisis, currently ranking as the second-fastest state for farmland loss in the nation, outpaced only by Texas. Henderson County along has seen its rural identity rapidly eroded, hemorrhaging thousands and thousands of acres of fertile farmland in the last 5 years to the insatiable demands of commercial developers and subdivisions. By imposing permanent deed restrictions that forever outlaw commercial partitioning, this bold referendum represents a desperate line in the sand, empowering a community to legally freeze developer expansion and shield its vital agricultural economy before the tractors are permanently replaced by bulldozers.
