How do I know if I want traditional highlights that are bright all the way up to the roots or highlights that have a darker root shadow?

🌞 The biggest difference between the two is that highlights going right up to the root will have a harsher line of demarcation and so will need to be refreshed every 8-12 weeks, they achieve maximum blonde and brightness and are good for people wanting to be super blonde.

😎 A teasylight or rooty highlight will have a softer grow out and can go longer between appointments but will also appear darker toward the scalp and can feel less bright around the face. Depending on how much blonde you want to see and how often you want to come into the salon will help you decide which look is right for you.

How do I know if I want full grey coverage or grey blending?

The biggest differentiation between grey coverage and grey blending is this: Do you want to see some grey still and have less upkeep or do you want to see zero grey and you don't mind more frequent salon visits for maintenance? Once you can answer that question, you'll know which direction you want to head. As always I'm happy to talk through all the pros and cons at each consultation and can help you figure out what works best for you and your lifestyle.

As the cooler months start to bring that crisp dry air, remember there are a couple things we can do to help prevent static and flyaways.

πŸ’§ Use a microfiber towel or cotton t-shirt to dry your hair. This helps prevent frizz from manually drying the hair with fabric that causes more friction. Squeeze your hair out instead of rubbing the hair as the friction will cause more frizz and flyaways.

🍣 Make sure you're getting enough omegas to moisturize your skin and hair naturally from diet as well as using moisture on the ends of your hair to prevent static caused by dry locks. Foods like salmon, walnuts, and chia seeds are great sources of omega 3's that help nourish our hair.

What kind of Fall foods are your favorite this time of year? I love anything with cinnamon, and I love some cinnamon apples fried on the stove. πŸ˜‹

Do you know the top 3 products to avoid when you have fine hair and what to use instead? πŸ—’

1️⃣ Hair oils: My fine hair ladies don't need the hair oils that will weigh their hair down, instead use a light leave in conditioner to help detangle and give light moisture while still keeping those beautiful strands buoyant and healthy. 🧴

2️⃣ Deep conditioners or moisture conditioners: You still need to use conditioner! Just put it on the ends of the hair and avoid the scalp and go for conditioners that are for volume, light daily conditioners, or even a light leave in conditioner. You need to keep your hair moisturized so it won't have static or get brittle. 🚿

3️⃣ Smoothing creams and serums: Even if you have curly hair but it's very fine, avoid the creams and serums designed for smoothing. Those are generally much heavier and will most likely weigh your hair down. Instead go for blowdry lotions that have flexible hold and add a little body to the hair. πŸ‘©

I have to admit... I didn't know I wanted to do hair from a very young age like many stylists do. In fact it wasn't until I was 20 when I realized this was the industry for me, but I did know from a young age that I wanted to help people and I wanted to create beauty.

And now 14 years later after starting in the world of hair, I find myself loving the way I get to help people and create beauty. Not just the beauty of that perfect shade of color and an amazing blowout on a fresh new cut, but the beauty of the smile when my guest loves their hair, or walks out of the salon a little more confident and refreshed. I love the beauty of knowing people for years and laughing and talking about the ups and downs of life while I get to take care of them while they finally get a minute to themselves to take a break. Creating an experience where someone feels seen and heard and valued is the kind of beauty I love to create, as well as lots of beautiful hair. πŸ₯°

How do I know whether a warmer blonde or cooler blonde is right for me? πŸ€”

There are a few factors to consider when going blonde.

1. How dark is your natural hair color? Starting points affect the end result and overall look and you have to consider hair health when looking at how light you can go.
2. What is your complexion, warm, neutral, olive? You don't want a tone that will clash with your skin so it's always good to look at swatches with your stylist to help you decide on a tone that's right for you.
3. What kind of maintenance are you willing to commit to for upkeep? Deciding how often you want to be coming back to the salon can help determine the right color choice for your lifestyle and budget.

I love helping my guests switch things up with their hair, but I will also help advise them on the best choice for their hair health and that fits their lifestyle as well. That's why when changing things up or coming to me for the first time, I'll always give an in depth consultation that goes through questions like these to help you decide what works best for you and your hair. πŸ‘±πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ

Want to know my two absolutely favorite tips for healthy hair and scalp heading into the Fall this year? 🍁

1️⃣ Get a showerhead filter to filter out the hard minerals and chlorine from your tap water. It helps to keep your scalp less flaky by removing chlorine and minerals that cause irritation to the skin and scalp. ( Bonus all my skin has felt so much less dry since using a showerhead filter!) Also it helps preserve your color and prevents dullness from mineral buildup. πŸ’–

2️⃣ Use a scalp scrub shampoo when you are struggling with flakes before you add any kind of moisture (for dry scalp). If you struggle with dandruff or dry scalp getting buildup off your scalp is essential for helping create a healthy scalp environment.

When do I know it's time to switch up my haircare during the season changes?

We've been enjoying this beautiful Fall weather here lately and though it may not last for long before second Summer is back, it does remind us that change is in the air. πŸ‚β˜€And when the air changes from our lovely humid and hot Richmond weather, to cooler and less humidity we might begin to notice changes in our hair as well.

This begs the question is my Summer hair routine something I can keep doing in the Fall and Winter? Most of the time we notice our scalp getting drier the colder the air gets and when there is less moisture in the air our scalp and skin starts to feel it. Once you start to notice changes in your skin and scalp it's definitely time to switch things up. Here are 3 checks that can help you know when it's time for a switch.

Check 1️⃣: Is my skin or scalp feeling dry? Time to switch to more moisture either in my shampoo or conditioner.

Check 2️⃣: Is my hair laying flat without the humidity? Time to switch to volume products for styling or ones with more hold for body.

Check 3️⃣: Is my hair feeling straw like or flying away after I style it? More moisture in your cleansing routine as well as styling products. That could be a deep conditioner after shampoo as well as switching to a taming lotion for styling.

If you feel overwhelmed when it comes to figuring out what your hair and scalp need for the changing of the season, feel free to talk to me. I love helping my guests with every aspect of their haircare needs and I'm always here to help. Let's do a scalp check at your next appointment and see if you need anything adjusted for the coming colder months. πŸπŸŒ¬πŸ‚
