Commericial Building For Sale
103 E Main St, Milan, MI 48160
$295,000
Built in 1997 this bright & charming little shop is a gem in the heart of Milan’s downtown. It measures 984 square feet and has a full basement with cinder block walls & a poured concrete floor that houses the gas furnace, gas hot water heater, a utility sink, and a sump pump still leaving ample room for storage. The building sits on a busy corner lot that measures 66ft (along Main St) x 100ft (along Ferman St) with the option for additional construction or even a drive-thru. The building is well maintained and boasts a new roof in 2017. The current floor plan includes a service area for customers, an ADA compliant rest room with one sink & one commode, a back room with a utility sink, and a small room with a door leading to the back yard to store lawn mower/snow blower to maintain the property. The building has been home to a barber shop for the last 25 years but would also make a nice retail or office space.

Edit: Ray is humbled by all the messages and likes, he has enjoyed reading all of them. Thank you so much!

With a lot of pride for a job well done, we announce Ray Novara’s retirement. Ray has been cutting hair in Milan for over 51 years. His first job in Milan was working for Ray Frisbie at Frisbie’s Barber Shop on the corner of Main and Wabash (currently Lavender Lane). Mr. Frisbie was a great boss, mentor, and friend to Ray and his young family, even acting as surrogate grandparents to Ray’s children. Afterall, Ray and his wife, Caryl, had moved 500 miles away from their family in the U.P. to settle in Milan. Ray has loved the life he made in Milan, but still embraces his ‘Yooper’ roots and makes the trek “home” whenever he has the opportunity.

Mr. Frisbie sold the business to Ray in 1972 and then worked part-time for a few years before fully retiring in 1975. Ray enjoyed his work and location there on the corner, just down the street from the Fire Station. When the fire whistle blew, Ray could be found in the middle of the intersection directing traffic for the volunteer firefighters who were making their way to the fire station and for the fire trucks on their way out to the fire.

Ray rented that spot on the corner from another kind gentleman, Mr. Millard Phillips, who owned the jewelry store next-door. Mr. Phillips was a wonderful landlord over the years and upon his retirement he offered to sell the building to Ray. Ray liked owning his own business, but did not want to become a landlord, so he declined the offer to purchase the building at 12 East Main. After the sale of the building, Ray spotted a corner lot just down the street and a dream was born to own a small building where he could be completely independent. So, in 1997 the ground was broken at 103 E Main St and the dream became reality.

At the original shop, Ray had kept the name, “Frisbie’s Barber Shop,” to honor Mr. Frisbie, but with the move down the street and a new building a new name seemed to be in order. With Mr. Frisbie and Ray sharing the same first name, it seemed fitting to call the new shop “Ray’s Barber Shop.” A photo of Mr. Frisbie has always hung on the wall in the new shop as a reminder of how Ray got his start as a business owner.

Though there were two barber chairs, Ray worked alone for many years before welcoming another barber in 2014. With Angie in the shop, it allowed Ray to consider cutting back and spending more time with his family, so in 2016 he dropped his schedule to two days per week.

Over these last 5 or so years he has enjoyed the balance that working two days a week has provided. He has attended many ball games for his grandsons, done some traveling, and has been able to spend time with family & friends. Now, with his full retirement, he hopes to do a lot more of the same. So, CONGRATULATIONS Ray, to us, you will always be the best looking guy in the chair!
