Where wild horses roam, tides breathe, and light tells its own story. This is Delmarva through my lens.

Assateague Lightning and one of his beloved mares.

This stallion has long been one of the island’s legends. A few months back, many of us were concerned to see him moving with a noticeable limp.

There is something about this horse. So much emotion behind his eyes, and the same could be said for his mare. I’m praying for his healing, and praying he makes it through another winter on Assateague Island.

If any of you have seen Lightning or Pixie recently, I’d truly love to hear how they’re doing. Admittedly, I haven’t been on the island in about two or three weeks.

Dad life and work have been pulling me in other directions lately.

Have a great afternoon, everyone.

Wildfire Sunset

The sunset arrived through wildfire haze, reminding us that even beauty can rise from disorder. The sky burns, the light fades, and for a fleeting moment, we are reminded how beautiful it is to simply be here. 🧡

Have a blessed and productive Wednesday ahead!

The Atlantic Always Has the Final Word

When the sea gives something back, there’s usually a story behind it.

Buoy 8B, once part of the navigational system guiding mariners through the approaches to Delaware Bay, now rests on the shore near Herring Point at Cape Henlopen.

After the recent nor’easter, 8B and several other navigation buoys have washed ashore along our coast.

It takes an incredible amount of power to tear these markers from the open ocean and carry them home.

A reminder that the Atlantic can be peaceful one moment and powerful the next.

The ocean always has the final word. 🌊

Before the waves, there is the sunrise.

A local surfer pauses for a moment to take in the morning color, standing at the edge of an Atlantic that seems to stretch endlessly toward the horizon.

Then, board in hand, he paddles out into the quiet.

No crowds. No noise. Just the rhythm of the ocean, the colors of a new day, and the promise of whatever waits beyond the break.

Sometimes the best way to start the day is simply to paddle out and see where the waves take you.

Keep looking up... cheers to a week of triumphs and successes ahead! 🌅 🌊

A Light That Still Remains

Some places tell their story best without color.

Seen from above, the Inner Wall and East End Breakwater Lighthouse stand alone in the Delaware Bay, surrounded by wind, water, and open sky.

The black-and-white image brings the drama forward. Every rock, every paint chip, every memory of her long-lost past. The contrast defines every edge, while the lighthouse holds its place against the sea, steady and unmistakable.

A reminder that even in the middle of something vast and uncertain, a light can still guide us home, even long after it has gone dark.

Storms come. Tides change. The horizon fades into gray.

Keep looking up. Keep standing. Keep shining.

Sometimes, a single light is all we need to remember where we are.

A young Ro Sham Bo and his big brother Maximus, taking in the morning light. 🐴☀️

This photo has never seen the light of day until now. This handsome boy was born in 2023 to Susi Soleil, who we sadly lost back in August after an automobile accident.

Life, in all its forms, is precious. Every moment, every memory, and every friendship we’re fortunate enough to share along the way.

I love fall, but I sure do miss summer already.

Here’s to a blessed and beautiful week ahead. The storm has cleared, and the sun is ready to shine once more.

All my best,

WAIT… those yellow feet are actually part of the hunt. 👀 💛

This is a Snowy Egret, and those ridiculously bright yellow feet aren’t just beautiful.

When hunting in shallow water, Snowy Egrets will shuffle, stomp and wave their feet to scare small fish and other prey out of hiding. The moment something moves… ⚡️ that lightning-fast black bill goes to work.

And those delicate feathers?

They’re called "aigrettes", and they nearly cost these birds their future. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, their breeding plumes were so valuable in the fashion industry that millions of birds were killed for their feathers.

Thankfully, the Snowy Egret survived.

Today, you can still find these little white hunters working the marshes, ponds and waterways of Delmarva.

Yellow feet. Black dagger of a bill. Those incredible plumes. One of the most beautiful little predators on the Delmarva Peninsula. 🐦

Keep looking up.

I am super excited to announce that I will soon have a new gallery space to showcase my art right here in Harbeson, DE! 📸

I just signed a contract with Queenie’s Curio for their new gallery, opening early next month. I am truly blessed to share this space with some incredibly talented artists from right here on Delmarva.

One of the things I’m most excited about is having a gallery just 5–10 minutes from home. It gives me the opportunity to keep the space fresh and continually rotating with some of my latest and greatest work, including prints on metal, canvas, and fine art prints on framed archival paper... I will also have plenty of affordable matted prints too. :)

There is something pretty special about seeing your artwork find a home in the community you love and photograph so often.

There is a ton of bright light ahead, and I’m grateful for every step along the way.

Please give Kathy's business page a follow and stay tuned for the grand opening! We have a soft opening in early October coming.

Queenie’s Curio has the details.

All my best,

-KL
