I’ve debated writing this for a long time because owning a small business in a small town means you usually smile, keep your mouth shut, and hope common courtesy eventually makes a comeback.

Unfortunately…it hasn’t.

Five years ago, after surviving a devastating fire, we were blessed to move into our beautiful new salon with a parking lot. It was a huge relief because our clients—especially my elderly clients—finally had a safe, convenient place to park instead of circling downtown.

Apparently, though, our parking lot has become everyone’s favorite “I’ll only be a minute” parking spot.

Need to run into the liquor store? Sure.
Dropping the dog off at the groomer? Why not.
Grabbing dinner? Perfect.
Need to ignore the giant CUSTOMER PARKING ONLY signs? Even better.

Here’s the thing…

It’s not public parking. It never has been.

I pay for those parking spaces so the people who keep my business alive can actually use them.

What some people don’t see is my 90-year-old client pulling in for her appointment only to find nowhere to park because someone figured the rules didn’t apply to them for “just five minutes.”

Those five minutes matter.

It’s also a very small parking lot. Cars have been hit. Our fence has been damaged more than once. People have actually driven into our building—not once, but multiple times. The last accident was so severe that there was discussion about whether the building could even remain open.

I’ve already survived losing my salon to a fire.
I survived almost a year of COVID.
I’d really rather not lose my business because someone couldn’t be bothered to read a parking sign.

The part that amazes me most isn’t even the parking anymore—it’s the entitlement.

Yesterday, someone parked smack in the middle of our lot, turned on their hazard lights, and asked me why it was a problem.

I wasn’t aware flashers were the universal symbol for “the rules no longer apply to me.”

And before anyone says, “Just have them towed!”—believe me, if only it worked that way. By the time a tow truck gets here, they’ve already finished their “quick errand” and driven away, leaving me to explain to another paying client why they have nowhere to park.

Please understand…I’m not trying to be difficult, unfriendly, or “that business owner.”

I’m trying to protect something I’ve worked incredibly hard to build & rebuild.

If a parking lot says Customer Parking Only, it’s there for a reason. It’s not a suggestion. It’s not a challenge. And it’s definitely not an invitation to see how quickly you can make it back before I notice.
