JACK is a 9 year old 10 pound terrier mix who was adopted from us in 2023. He was recently returned because his adopter had an injury that required major surgery and she is facing a long recovery, including rehab, and he is not playing nicely with her caretakers.
Jack is a cute, scruffy boy with a little mohawk! He is affectionate, likes to be hugged, and loves giving kisses. He will put his paws on your leg and ask to be picked up to be loved on and loves snuggling with you on the couch.
JACK is good with certain small dogs, but does not do well with bigger dogs or dogs that are active or in his face. He is fine with calm, small older dogs, preferably females, and would be perfectly fine as an only dog. He should not go to a home with kids of any age and doesn't like cats.
JACK walks on a leash, knows how to use a doggy door and is 90% potty trained. He has good house manners and doesn't get into any trouble when his people aren't home. He loves to go outside and rides well in the car. A fenced yard where he can run around and burn off some energy would also make him happy.
As cute as he is, JACK definitely has some issues. He prefers women over men and is protective of whoever has chosen person is, male or female. He may bite people who come near his person, normally giving a warning growl first so someone has an opportunity to back off. He was handled by several people at our vet with no problem, but he's probably best suited to a one owner home.
His foster mom has not had any issues with JACK and believes that if you avoid his triggers he will be fine. Those triggers are taking away something away from him and making him do something he doesn't want to do, like get off the bed before he is ready to telling him no.
At night, JACK likes to sleep at bottom of the big bed snuggled next to his person, but because of his protective tendencies we would recommend not allowing him to sleep in the bed but rather in the bedroom in a dog bed nearby.
To meet JACK please submit an online adoption application for review using this link https://form.jotform.com/232395363383057 or by visiting our website www.aplaceofhoperescue.com and filling out an application on our application page. Submission of an application does not obligate you to adopt or guarantee approval.

Ask anyone involved in dog rescue why they advocate for spaying and neutering, and the first thing you will most likely hear is that spaying and neutering prevents unwanted puppies and helps with overpopulation. There are way too many unwanted puppies and dogs being thrown in ditches or being left in boxes on the roadside or in the woods or dumped in shelters and rescues. The second thing is that spaying and neutering prevents some serious health risks.
There are many people who aren't aware of the potential dangers an unaltered dog faces, particularly females. Unspayed females can get a very serious infection of the uterus called pyometra. Pyometra is what happens when the uterus becomes infected and fills up with pus and bacteria. If untreated, pyometra can lead to a ruptured uterus, kidney failure, toxemia, dehydration, and death. It most often occurs after a female comes out of heat. Pyometra can be totally prevented by spaying your dogs, which is one reason vets and other animal advocates argue for it. 1 of 4 unaltered females will suffer from pyometra before the age of 10, and in many cases it is fatal.
Additionally, more than a quarter of unspayed female dogs will develop a mammary tumor during their lifetime. Mammary tumors are more common in female dogs that are either not spayed or that were spayed after the age of 2 because unspayed female dogs have fully-developed mammary tissue. A female dog spayed prior to s*xual maturity (around 6 months old) is at a reduced risk of mammary cancer because the spay removes the ovaries, which produce the estrogen that is significant to the full development of the mammary glands. The risk of a dog developing a mammary tumor is 0.5% if spayed before their first heat (approximately 6 months of age), 8% after their first heat, and 26% after their second heat. Intact male dogs have a higher risk of developing testicular cancer and un-neutered males can develop prostate enlargement or prostate infections, leading to urinary and bowel issues.
One of our biggest requirements for adopting a dog is that all pets in the home are spayed or neutered. Too often we receive applications with unaltered pets and when we ask if there's a medical reason (and we have run into those over the years) we hear no, but they don't have any dogs in the home of the opposite s*x or they don't go outside of a fenced area so they're safe. We do our best to educate, and many people are very receptive, which we appreciate! Some aren't and we just ask them to please act immediately when their dog develops tumors or pyometra. Many vets, including ours, will discuss this with their clients but we are always surprised that many don't. Either way, as a dog owner, it is best to be as educated as possible on any health risks to your beloved fur kids.
I don’t know how some people sleep at night. Abandoning a pregnant dog in the wilderness.

How do these judges ever make it to be a judge. They seem to be so stupid.
