BABY, WE HAVE HISTORY 😂

She first came to me in 2024 with permanent black color wanting orange ghost roots. Since then, we’ve worked through DIY color, a platinum goal that turned into calico ghost roots—and now permanent “black cherry.”

So no, this wasn’t just a simple brunette-to-copper moment.

THEN HER ENDS HUMBLED US

The original plan was to shift her ends using copper color with a stronger developer. And bleach her roots for a little copper with blonde ghost roots moment.

Her roots lifted beautifully. Her ends said, “Girl, f**k no.” 😂

So instead of forcing it or pretending it was fine, we switched the plan.

WE PIVOTED AND TRANSFORMED🧡

We carefully bleach-washed those stubborn ends, adjusted the goal, deepened where needed and changed the formula to work with the canvas in front of us.

The plan changed—but this rich, dimensional copper was absolutely the right result.

Girl, don’t you get tired of being sucked in the trap? Everything so polished everything’s so perfect. Let me post a pretty picture, blah blah blah blah blah🗣️🗣️. I know you’re dying to comment your worst experience so let’s do it.😏✌️

She came to me with a hair challenge, OK picture this overgrown roots that faded into old highlights. The entire underneath of her hair was completely untouched.
Her stylist before was claiming to do a full highlight. now I know what the word fool means and what she had on her head was definitely not a full highlight.

Not only to mention she was the first time Client, but she was the first time Client that had One give away from me so I had no way, but to pop my s**t to get her where she needed to be.

Now you can’t tell in the reel as much as in real life, but my client does have super baby fine hair and it’s thin. So with hair like hers, you do have to be very meticulous with where you place things and how you overlap bleach.

So she came in for a consultation and we knocked it out the park and that goes without saying.

I mentioned to her it may take us 3 to 4 sessions to get us where you want to be, which is a very bold blonde.

Her transformation is one that I’m always super Duper, proud of because she had a lot of uneven tones of blonde in her hair and not to mention how thin her natural hair is.

It took a lot of work a ton of hours.

But she knows and I know it was definitely worth it.

Could you see yourself dropping a grand just to get to your hair goals?!⚡️

Let’s be real… we all f**k up sometimes. But THIS particular situation had me without sleep 💤

My client came in with previously highlights that were grown out, she came to me asking for a natural icy blonde.

She didn’t care how I did it, she just wanted what she wanted. So me being the TRANSFORMATIONALIST I am, I had to come up with a plan on how to tackle this.

Now I’m always thinking of new ways to get the results, so I try something I’ve NEVER done before

high lift color….

First mistake was not preparing myself enough on how high lift color for blondes actually works.

Second mistake assuming trying something new on a NEW CLIENT was a good idea!

Needless to say she ended up leaving with super warm roots

She had work, school pickup, and worst of all had to look at herself in the mirror everyday.

The question I know you’re asking is if she came back?

Well she did!

And I was able to turn this horrible disaster into something she was proud to walk around with. She placed her trust in me to do my f**king thing like I know I can.

Moral of the story every now and then we make a mistake but it how we FIX that mistake matters! And never make the same mistake twice ✌️ take accountability and move forward.

Lesson learned 💯💯

One thing I’ve learned the HARD way? A thorough consultation is never optional—it’s mandatory to create a result both you and your client can depend on.

Asking the RIGHT questions about their hair history, expectations, maintenance, budget and future goals can help completely eliminate misunderstandings, prevent unnecessary redos and protect the integrity of their hair.

Consultation questions I never skip ⏭️
1. What do you love—and want to change—about your current hair?
2. What’s your goal for today, and what’s your long-term goal?
3. Do you want to be seen as blonde, brunette — do you want the change bold or subtle?
4. What color, lightener, box dye or direct dye has been used on your hair?
5. What do you like about your inspiration pictures—and which colors do YOU see?
6. Are you willing to pivot if your hair can’t handle your goal expectations — what are your non-negotiables
7. What matters most: the color, brightness, placement or overall vibe?
8. How much dimension or contrast do you want?
9. Is there anything you absolutely do NOT want?
10. Are you open to multiple sessions or adjusting the goal to protect your hair?
11. How often are you realistically willing to return, and what maintenance budget feels comfortable?
12. Are you willing to use the right products to maintain your results at home?
13. How do you normally wear and style your hair—including your natural texture and heat usage?

Bonus question: Do you plan to keep this color long-term, or will you want to switch it up later?

Remember: what your client sees in an inspiration picture may be completely different from what you see as a stylist. Asking them to describe it can prevent a whole lot of misunderstandings—and redos.

The right questions create clear expectations, fewer misunderstandings and results everyone can feel confident about. 🙌🏼

Stylists—what’s one consultation question you never skip?
