“How do I find my foundation shade?” Is the number 1 question I get as a makeup artist. Here’s a few tips that will help you find the perfect (or close to perfect) match when it comes to foundation and creating a flawless skin finish.

1. Find your undertone

Undertones fall into three categories: warm, cool, and neutral. Warm undertones are golden, cool is more pink or red, and neutral is a mixture of both. If you’re not sure just by looking at your skin, check the color of your veins. Blue veins are cool, blue/green are neutral, and green are warm." Accessories can also help determine your undertone. If you look better in gold, you’re warm. If silver compliments you better, you’re cool. If either one looks great on you, you’re neutral.

2. Pick 2-3 foundation shades closest to your complexion

When trying to match your skin, the best place to try foundations is on your jawline. Apply one small swipe of each foundation from your jawline, down to your neck. Blend each swipe with your finger and allow it to sit! Go shopping, run errands, give the foundation time to oxidize. The shade that matches your chest is your shade. DO NOT MATCH TO YOUR NECK! Some people’s necks are darker and/or may have hyperpigmentation.
