Long post but quite interesting. This is called Rogue wax by some" it is beeswax that honeybees build outside the boundaries of the provided, removable wooden frames inside the hive. This was given to me by my friend at the . * has explained this in the following way “It’s just called burr comb.
They build it for a reason so I don’t like saying rogue wax because it implies they are doing something wrong. We really don’t know what they are doing.
Having this idea of burr comb is what made me take two years to realize that the burr comb in the frame feeder was actually a ladder, to keep themselves from drowning.”
When bees build this erratic, free-form structure, it creates a physical headache for the beekeeper and risks the health of the colony.
Why Bees Build Rogue Wax
* Violating the "Bee Space": Honeybees naturally insist on a perfect gap width of exactly 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch (6.5 to 9.5 mm) to navigate. If frames are spaced too far apart, or if a gap is left open in the hive, the bees instinctively fill that empty void with rogue wax.
* Ignoring the Foundation: Beekeepers often use plastic or wax "foundations" inside frames to guide the bees into building straight lines. If the colony dislikes a frame or lacks structural guidance, they will build wild, curved combs on their own terms.
* High Honey Flow: When a colony experiences a massive influx of nectar and runs out of room, worker bees secrete wax rapidly to build immediate emergency storage wherever they can find a spot.
The Problems It Causes
* Glues the Hive Shut: Rogue wax fastens separate wooden frames, box walls, and the top inner cover tightly together.
* Prevents Inspections: Beekeepers must regularly lift frames out to monitor for pests and diseases. Rogue comb locks everything in place, making it impossible to smoothly extract a single frame without tearing the structure apart.
* Harms the Bees: Tearing open a hive glued together by rogue wax can break open cells, crush worker bees, leak precious honey, and potentially kill the queen.
How Beekeepers Fix It
Beekeepers must intervene by using a sharp hive tool to carefully cut out the rogue wax. If the rogue comb already contains baby bees (brood) or honey, the beekeeper will often gently slice it into flat squares, place it inside an empty frame, and wrap it with rubber bands. The bees then accept the frame and naturally secure the edges back into place.
What can rogue be used for? Beekeepers collect rogue wax (burr comb) during hive inspections, melt it down, and filter out impurities like cocoons and bee parts. Once purified, this wax is highly valuable and used for numerous practical applications.
Top Uses for Purified Rogue Wax
* Hive Foundation Coating: Beekeepers melt it to roll onto new plastic hive frames, encouraging bees to build straight comb.
* All-Natural Candles: Its high melting point makes long-lasting, soot-free candles with a rich, natural honey scent.
* Cosmetics and Skincare: It acts as a natural thickener and moisture barrier in lip balms, body lotions, and hand salves.
* Reusable Food Wraps: Coated onto cotton fabric, it creates an eco-friendly, antibacterial alternative to plastic wrap.
* Wood and Leather Polish: Mixed with oils (like linseed or olive), it creates a protective, waterproof paste for furniture and boots.
* Thread and Tool Lubricant: Tailors run thread through it to prevent tangles, and woodworkers coat saw blades to reduce friction.
* Waterproofing Sealant: It can be rubbed onto canvas bags, outdoor gear, or metal tools to seal out moisture and prevent rust.

This may be my favorite beeswax candle!! Love the texture of the honey comb on this.
🐝 Beeswax is a natural, renewable wax made by honeybees to build honeycomb. It is better to burn than other waxes because it burns cleaner, lasts longer, and emits a natural honey aroma without toxic chemicals 🐝

Best Cheese Pairings for honey🍯

Goat Cheese (Chèvre): Tangy and tart; honey cuts the acidity for a sweet-and-creamy contrast.

Brie or Camembert: Buttery and soft; mild enough to let floral or standard honey shine.

Aged Gouda or Sharp Cheddar: Firm and salty-nutty; deep umami flavors balance well with rich or hot honey drizzles.

Blue Cheese: Pungent and salty; sweet honey tames the sharp bite

Best Crackers: plain water cress. Neutral and crisp; they provide a blank slate so the cheese and honey flavors stay front and center.

Stay healthy with food!
Why Red Onions?
(Recipe below)
Red onions are rich in quercetin, a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from oxidative stress and supports a healthy inflammatory response. They also provide prebiotic fiber, which feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut, along with vitamin C and other plant compounds that support overall wellness.
When naturally fermented, pickled red onions may also:
Support a healthy gut microbiome with beneficial bacteria.
Aid digestion.
Help increase the bioavailability of some nutrients.
Add a flavorful source of probiotics to your meals.
Enjoy them on salads, sandwiches, tacos, burgers, eggs, grain bowls, or alongside grilled meats.
Note: these onions are made with a vinegar pickle, they won’t contain live probiotics. This recipe uses only salt and water and ferments at room temperature, it is a lacto-fermented recipe and can develop beneficial bacteria when prepared properly.

✨ New candles have been created today! 🐝
I’m in love with these 100% beeswax tea lights! Available in heart, square, and round shapes, each container has tiny little feet, so there’s no need for a candle holder. They burn for about 5 hours, filling your space with the warm glow and natural honey scent of pure beeswax.
I also created hand-dipped meditation candles. They burn for about 20 minutes—just the right amount of time for prayer, meditation, or a quiet moment or a 20 minute yoga practice. Their beautiful golden flame and the simple, natural scent of beeswax create such a peaceful atmosphere.
Made with pure beeswax from apiaries in my area or from PA from my Amish beekeeper friends. All handmade by me —a little gift from the honey bees. 💛🐝
