Small-batch bath, body & herbal goods made the old-fashioned way. Old School Herb Co.

Simple ingredients, traditional methods, and locally sourced or wildcrafted ingredients when possible. 🌿 (formerly Mountain Valley Herbals) is a small Western Colorado apothecary rooted in bioregional herbalism. We craft salves, balms, tinctures, Glycerites, and body care products using wildcrafted herbs and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible — including Colorado beeswax, grass-fed beef tallow, and pure lard. Every product is made in small batches with respect for the plants, the land, and the people who use them, keeping traditional herbal wisdom alive the old-school way.

🧼 **The soap is back!**

Well, almost.

After taking a little break from soap making, I've been busy getting the kettles going again—and four batches are now curing.

Back in the lineup:

🌲 Pine Tar
🖤 Charcoal
🖤 Desert Timber
🥃 Bourbon, Cypress & To***co

There's something rewarding about seeing a whole batch of handmade soap lined up and ready for the next few weeks of curing.

**Old School Herb Co. soap is back by popular demand—and there’s more to come.** 🌿

🌿 **Yarrow**

One of those plants that has earned its place in the old-fashioned herbal apothecary.

Yarrow's delicate white flowers and feathery leaves may look unassuming, but this is a plant with a long history of traditional herbal use. It's one of the herbs I love having on hand, both for the beautiful plant it is and for the many ways it can be incorporated into an herbal practice.

A little wild, a little weedy, and incredibly useful—that's yarrow. 🌿

🌿 **All-Purpose Herbal Balm**

Three traditional herbs, infused into sunflower oil and blended with rich cocoa butter, beeswax, and a touch of lavender essential oil.

**Calendula • Chamomile • St. John’s Wort**

This is the kind of simple, versatile balm I like to keep on hand—made with thoughtfully chosen ingredients and no unnecessary extras.

Small-batch, handmade, and made the old-fashioned way. 🌿

This is definitely **not a cinematic beeswax video.** 😂 But it is real life around here!

A big chunk of beeswax isn't especially useful when you're trying to make salves, balms, and other small-batch products, so I turn it into manageable little pieces.

Melt it down → pour it into mini ice cube trays → let it cool → pop them out → break them apart → and they're ready to use. 🐝🕯️

It's a simple little step, but having beeswax in small, easy-to-measure pieces makes production so much easier.

And honestly, sometimes the behind-the-scenes stuff isn't pretty or fancy. It's just **making things work.** 😉

There’s something satisfying about taking something that might otherwise be discarded and turning it into something useful.

This is how I render beef tallow: slowly, simply, and without much fuss.

The raw ground fat goes into the crockpot and renders down gently. Once the fat has melted, I strain it to remove the solids, leaving behind clean, rendered tallow.

Tallow has been used for generations in everything from cooking and candle making to soap and body care. Around here, it still has plenty of uses.

This is the kind of traditional, practical making that is at the heart of Old School Herb Co. 🌿

And yes, that little bit of rendered tallow will eventually make its way into some of the things I'm making in the shop.
