The bathroom smelled like hairspray thick enough to taste, music humming faintly from a radio somewhere down the hall, and a comb in your hand working overtime like it had a job to do. You leaned in close to the mirror, lifting, teasing, shaping, stepping back just enough to see if it was “high enough” yet.

And if it wasn’t? You went back in.

There was no such thing as too big. Too bold. Too much. That was the whole point. You weren’t trying to blend in with anyone. You were making sure when you walked into school, the mall, or a party… people noticed.

Not because someone told you to be confident.
Because you decided to be.

We all knew that feeling. The final spray before you left the house. That moment you checked it one last time and thought, yeah… this is it. This is who I am today. And somehow, that hair held more than just style. It held attitude. Energy. A little bit of rebellion.

You didn’t need a filter. You didn’t need approval.
You had a mirror, a can, and a mindset.

Now everything’s softer. Easier. Faster.

But back then, nothing about it was instant. You earned that look. You committed to it.

And maybe that’s why it meant more.

Because it wasn’t just how you looked… it was how you showed up.

And if you ever walked out the door with your hair reaching for the sky, feeling like nothing could touch you… then you already know.

Some confidence wasn’t taught. It was sprayed, shaped, and worn like armor.
